Manistique is the only city and county seat of Schoolcraft County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 2,828. The city lies on the north shore of Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Manistique River. The economy depends heavily on tourism from Lake Michigan, as well as nearby Indian Lake State Park and Palms Book State Park. It is believed to be named for the emerald green waters of the nearby Kitch-iti-kipi spring, which is the largest spring in the state. The City is named after the river, which was originally spelled Monistique, a spelling error in the city charter led to its current spelling. It was incorporated as a village in 1883 and as a city in 1901 by the state legislature. It has a humid continental climate, with warm to hot (and often humid) summers and cold (sometimes severely cold) winters. The population of the city was 81.9% White, 0.7% Native American, 9.2% African American, 1.5% Asian, 0,1% from other races, and 3.9%. The city is serviced by the KISQ Airport (KISQ) and M-94 bus service between St. Ignace and Ironwood, Michigan (M-94). The city has a total area of 3.51 square miles (9.19 square km²), of which 3.26 km² is land and 0.32 square kilometres (0.83 km²) is water.

History

Manistique is the primary city name, but also Thompson are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Manistique. Manistique was incorporated as a village in 1883 and as a city in 1901. It is believed to be named for the emerald green waters of the nearby Kitch-iti-kipi spring. The Manistique Area Schools athletic teams are referred to as the "Emeralds" Several local businesses include " Emerald City" in their names. The city was originally named Eastport, but a spelling error in the city charter led to its current spelling. It replaced Onota as the county seat of Onota County, Michigan, in 1881. It was named after the largest spring in the state of Michigan, which is located in the town's geographic center. It has a population of about 2,000 people, with most of its residents living in the central part of the city. The town is located on the Michigan Turnpike, which runs through the town of Manistiques. It also has the Michigan State University campus, which was founded in 1876. The state legislature named the city after the town in 1901, when it was still a village. It became a city after a state legislature passed a bill in 1901 to make the city a city. It had been known as Eastport until the state legislature changed the name. The name was changed back to Eastport in 1903, and it was the name of the post office, but was not used for the community. The river was originally spelled Monistique, but the spelling error led to the current spelling of the town.

It is located in the Côte-d'Or region of the Dordogne region of France, which is part of the France-Rhône-Alpes region. It has an elevation of 3,744 feet (1,081 meters) and a population density of 3:1. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in World War I. It also hosted the opening of the French Embassy in Paris, which was the first French capital to do so. The U.N. has a consulate in the city, which opened in 1881. The French Embassy has a mission in Paris and a consulate-general in the town of Saint-Germain-en-Provence, where it was founded in 1883. The airport is located on the French Riviera, and was the location of the first airport in the world, opening in 1885. The port of St-Jean-Drouot is the only one in the region with a population over 1,000.

The racial makeup of the city was 81.9% White, 0.2% African American, 9.7% Native American, 1.5% Asian, and 0.1% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.0% of the population. The city's median age was 43 years; 23% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.3% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22.4% were from 25 to 44; 26.6% from 45 to 64; and 20.6 per cent were 65 years of age or older. The gender ratio was 46.3 per cent male and 53.7 per cent female. The population density was 340.2 square kilometres (131.4 sq mi) The city has a population of 2.828, with 1.193 housing units at an average density of 506.9 per square mile (195.7/km²) The average household size was 2.15, and the average family size is 2.87. It is the only city in the state to have a population over 2,000. It has one of the highest rates of obesity in the United States, with an average weight of 3.7 pounds (1.7 kg) per capita. Infrastructure

Indian Trails provides daily intercity bus service between St. Ignace and Ironwood, Michigan. Manistique is serviced by the Schoolcraft County Airport (KISQ) US 2 and M-94 are the main routes through the town. The town has a population of about 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in the town of Ironwood. It is located on the Michigan Turnpike, which was built in the early 20th century.
