Sparta is a village in Kent County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 4,244 at the 2020 census. Sparta is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area and is located about 10 miles (16 km) north of the city of Grand Rapids. The area was first settled in 1844, with the township formally organized in 1846. The village was platted in 1867 and incorporated in 1883. In the early to late 1960s, Sparta was home to Fenton Records, an independent record company and recording studio. The label recorded many local bands, as well as other Michigan garage bands. During World War II, the village was host to a German prisoner of war camp. In 2010, there were 4,140 people, 1,644 households, and 1,059 families living in the village. The racial makeup of the village is 94.5% White, 1.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.6% from other races, and. 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population. The median age in thevillage was 34 years. The gender makeup was 47.1% male and 52.9% female. The Rogue River flows through the western portion of theVillage. M-37 runs northsouth through the westmost portion of. the village, with a total area of 2.55 square miles (6.60 km²) is land and 0.01 square mile (0.40%) is water.

History

The Sparta area was first settled in 1844, with the township formally organized in 1846. The village was platted in 1867 and incorporated in 1883. Sparta was host to a German prisoner of war camp during World War II. In the early to late 1960s, Sparta home to Fenton Records, an independent record company and recording studio. The label recorded many local bands, as well as other Michigan garage bands. Due to the limited runs of the records, Fenton vinyl 45rpms are highly collectable, often selling for hundreds of dollars each. Many of these records were recently compiled on a CD called Scream Loud!!!: The Fenton records Story (Way Back Records).

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.56 square miles (6.63 km²) The Rogue River flows through the western portion of the village. M-37 runs northsouth through the westmost part of the town. The village is located on the Rogue River, which is a tributary of the Mississippi River. The town is located near the junction of two major highways: M- 37 and I-90. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located in the village, on the banks of the river. The site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1998. It is the only site in the United States to have been designated as a World HeritageSite by the United Nations. It has a population of 1,816. The population of the U-S. State of Alaska was 1,715. The state's population at the time of the 2010 Census was 2,814. The total population for the state of Alaska is 2,717. The area has a surface of 2,55 square miles, of which 2.55 sq miles is land and 0.01 sq miles, or 0.40% is water. The river runs through the village and flows into the river at the westernmost portion of it. The community is home to the town's only high school, which was built in the 1950s and 1960s. It was the first high school in the state to be built.
