Coldwater is a city in Branch County, Michigan, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 10,945. The Coldwater River flows into the city from the south, originating from Coldwater Lake. Coldwater has a climate that is borderline between categories Dfa (hot summer) and Dfb (long, warm summer) in the Köppen climate classification. The record high temperature of 115 °F was on July 12, 2011, and the record low temperature was -23 °F on January 4, 1981. The wettest year was 1905 with 46.12 inches and the driestyear was 1930 with 18.01 inches. The snowiest season was 1977-78 when 84.8 inches fell, including 50.7 inches in January 1978. A blizzard that month included 17.0 inches of snow on January 26, 1978. The city is surrounded by Coldwater Township, but is administratively autonomous. It was designated in 1842 as the county seat of Branch County. It is located in the center of the southern border of Michigan, in the middle of the state's Upper Peninsula. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city has a total area of 8.27 square miles (21.42 km²), of which 8.03 square miles. (20.80 km²) is land and 0.24 square miles(0.62 km²). The city has an average daily temperature of 90 °F (32 °C) or higher.

History

Coldwater was incorporated as a village in 1837, and then incorporated by the legislature as a city in 1861. It was designated in 1842 as the county seat of Branch County. American settlers did not move into the area until around 1830, with many arriving from New York and New England. Coldwater was named after the Coldwater River, which runs through the city. The city's name is derived from Coldwater, New York, which was the site of the first recorded European contact with the U.S. in the 17th century. It is the oldest city in the state, having been incorporated in 1861 after being designated as the city by the state legislature in 1847. It has a population of 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in Coldwater and its surrounding areas. The town is located in Branch County, which is home to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and the College of Medicine and Dentistry, which were founded in 1838 and 1841 respectively. It also has a small portion of the town of Wounded Knee, Wisconsin, which dates back to the 18th century, and the town's first post office was established in 1839. The village was named for Coldwater Creek, which ran through the town and was founded in 1788. The name Coldwater comes from the word coldwater, which means "cold water" or "cold" in English, and "wounded" in German. The word "coldwater" means "to water" and "water" is used to refer to water.

Arts and culture

The Little River Railroad offers rides behind a 1911-built steam locomotive, departing from the city's historic 1883 depot. The Tibbits Opera House in Coldwater was built in 1882; it is the second-oldest theater in Michigan. The Apple Fest held in September features home-baked goods made from apples and various arts and crafts. The Ice Festival held in January features ice carvings, a chili-tasting competition, and other family activities. The Strawberry fest held in June features many different foods made from strawberries and arts and Crafts. The Wing House is now operated as a historical museum by the Branch County Historical Society. It was converted to a movie theater in the 1930s. It is now a venue for a variety of cultural activities, including live performances and other events. The Coldwater Historical Society operates the Wing House as an historical museum. The city is home to the Michigan State Museum, which is open to the public on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is open on the weekends from 9 to 11 a.M. and on the weekend from noon to 6 p.M., depending on the weather. The museum is located in the town of Coldwater, Michigan, and is located on the banks of the Little River River. The town is also home to a number of tourist attractions, such as the Michigan Museum of Natural History and the Michigan Science Center, which are open from 9am to 5pm.

Education

Coldwater has a branch of Kellogg Community College and Baker College. Coldwater Community Schools is the public school district for Coldwater. Pansophia Academy is a charter school, grades K-12. St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School is a Catholic school in Coldwater, grades 5-5. Legg Middle School, grades 6-8, is a middle school, and Coldwater High is a high school. The school district also has a career center for high school students. The town has a chapter of the American College and University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, which offers vocational training to high school and college students.

Infrastructure

Coldwater is located in the northern part of Michigan. The city is located on I-69, US 12, and M-86. Memorial Airport serves general aviation only. Coldwater has an east-west railroad, but this is essentially a relic of one that led to Chicago and Detroit. The Coldwater Branch Area Transit Authority (BATA) provides public bus transportation to and from the city. It is also possible to fly in and out of the city by air or by water. The town has a population of about 2,000 people, with most of its residents living in the central part of the town, which is about 20 miles from the nearest major city, Sturgis.
