Middlebury is a town in Elkhart County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, the town population was 3,420. The town's economy is based on farming, tourism and manufacturing. The first settlers came from Middlebury, Vermont in 1832. In 1841, the first Amish families came from Somerset County, Pennsylvania. In 1888, the railroad came to Middlebury and began to diversify the town'sEconomy to include manufacturing as well as farming. Middlebury is located at 41°4026N 85°4234W (41.673863, -85.709443). It is located approximately 35 miles east of South Bend, 130 miles north of Chicago, Illinois and 165 miles south of Indianapolis. It has a free lending library, the Middlebury Community Library, and Northridge Middle School. The high school moved into a new building for the 2008-09 school year; the old high school was torn down and replaced with an intermediate school. The school system is K-3, 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12; the grade alignment is K, 4, 6, and 8. The library has a lending library. It is open to the public on weekdays, and the library is open on Saturday and Sunday. It also has an after-school program for children who want to learn about the history and culture of the area. It was founded in 1834, and was incorporated in 1868. It sits on the banks of the Little Elkart River.

According to the 2010 census, Middlebury has a total area of 3.78 square miles (9.79 km²) of which 99.47% is land and 0.02 sq miles (0.05 km²), or 0.53% is water. The town has a population of 1,816. It is located in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The state's population at the 2010 Census was 1,081. The city's population in the year of 2010 was 2,788. It has a latitude of 41.4°N and a longitude of 85°W. It sits in the state of Vermont and is located near the state capital of Minneapolis. It was founded in 1858. The village is located on the site of the former town of Middletown, which was once the seat of the state's first post-revolutionary government. The current mayor is Mark O'Mara, who was elected to his first term in office in 1998. The mayor was re-elected to a second term in 2008. He is currently running for a third term in the 2014 presidential election, which will be held on November 4, 2014. He has served as mayor of Middlebury since 1998.

History

The first settlers came from Middlebury, Vermont, in 1832. In 1841, the first Amish families came from Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Middlebury Township was organized in 1834 and the town of Middlebury was finally incorporated in 1868. Census estimates the town has a population of 3,400, up from 3,300 at the 2010 census. The city's population is expected to rise to 3,500 by the end of the year. It has a median age of 36.7 years, and a population density of 911.1 inhabitants per square mile (351.8/km²) The town's population has a growth rate of 0.6% since the 2000 census, and 0.7% from the 1990 Census. The racial makeup of the town is 95.6%, with 0.4% African American, 1.2% Asian, 0.0%. and 1.5% from two or more races. The Hispanic or Latino population is 3.2%.

Education

The Middlebury Community School system attracts many families to the area. The grade alignment is K-3, 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Northridge opened in 1969 and replaced the aging Middlebury and Jefferson Township High Schools. The high school moved into a new building for the 2008-09 school year; the old high school became Northridge Middle School and Heritage Middle School became an intermediate school. Jefferson Elementary was torn down and replaced in 1998 shortly after Orchard View had opened in 1995. The town has a free lending library, the Middlebury community Public Library. It is located on the corner of Main Street and Main Street in the center of the town. The library is open seven days a week and is open to the public. It has a collection of more than 2,000 books. It also has a computer lab and a computer center. It was built in the 1950s and is located in the town's historic downtown area. It opened in the early 1960s and has been there ever since. The school system was established in 1969. It now has a new high school, Northridge, and a middle school, Heritage, which opened in 1998. The elementary school, Jefferson Elementary, was demolished in 1998 and replaced with a new school, Orchardview Elementary, in the late 1990s. The middle school was closed and replaced by a new middle school called Northridge Elementary, which was opened in 2000. The community has a public library, which is open weekdays and weekends.

Economy

Middlebury's economy is based on farming, manufacturing, and tourism. Two major manufacturers of recreational vehicles, Jayco and Coachmen RV, have production facilities in Middlebury. Culver Duck Farms is the 2nd largest white pekin duck producer in the United States. The Meijer Central Kitchen produces deli salads, deli sandwiches, cookies, and sub buns. Das Dutchman Essenhaus is an Amish-themed restaurant, inn, conference center, and shops serve over 750,000 people every year. The town is also home to Krider World's Fair Garden and the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail. A $95,000 earmark was included in the federal FY2009 Omnibus Appropriations Bill to fund "Middlebury Economic Development, IN for development of a comprehensive plan for economic development that takes into account infrastructure needs, land use planning, and downtown redevelopment while balancing the needs of the large Amish population with that of the broader community" The town also has a wholesale food operation on site which ships various home-made products. It is home to bus manufacturer ARBOC Specialty Vehicles, which makes buses for the school district and the city of Middlebury as well as for the state of Indiana and the surrounding counties. It has a population of around 2,000, with the majority of the Amish living in and around the town of Middletown, Indiana. It also has the second-largest population of Amish people in the state, with around 1,500 people living in the town.
