Goshen (GOH-shn) is a city in and the county seat of Elkhart County, Indiana, United States. The population was 34,517 at the 2020 census. The city is known as an extremely prominent recreational vehicle and accessories manufacturing center. It is the home of Goshen College, a small Mennonite liberal arts college. Goshen is located in the northern part of Indiana near the Michigan border, in a region known as Michiana. In 2006, Goshen was the site for an immigration march. In March 2015, African Americans from living in the town, often under the threat of violence, often entering the town and entering the bars and clubs. The town is home to the largest county fair in the United States, the largest of its kind in the world, and the largest 4-H Fair in the U.S. It was platted in 1831 and is named after the Land of Goshens, which was once home to thousands of Native Americans. It has been the site of several deadly tornadoes, the most famous of which killed 137 Hoosiers on April 11, 1965, in Goshen and South Bend, Indiana. The most famous pair of tornadoes devastated the Midway Trailer Park (now inside Goshen) and the Sunnyside Housing Addition in Dunlap, Indiana on the same day. In 1983, President Lyndon Johnson visited the Dunlap Historic District, added in 1983 to the National Register of Historic Places.

History

Goshen is the primary city name, but also Foraker are acceptable city names or spellings. Goshen was platted in 1831. It was named after the Land of Goshen. The initial settlers consisted entirely of old stock "Yankee" immigrants, who were descended from the English Puritans who settled New England in the 1600s. The New England Yankee population that founded towns such as Goshen considered themselves the "chosen people," and identified with the Israelites of the Old Testament. For much of its history, Goshen was a "sundown town", forbidding African Americans from living in, or entering, the town, often under threat of violence. In March 2015, the city acknowledged this part of its past, apologizing and saying it no longer condones such behavior. The Goshen Historic District, added in 1983 to the National Register of Historic Places is bounded by Pike, RR, Cottage, Plymouth, Main, Purl, the Canal, and Second Sts. with the Elkhart County Courthouse at its center. The city was the site for an immigration march in April 2006, when 2000 to 3000 people marched from Linway Plaza to the County Cour courthouse. The town is located in ElkhART County, Indiana. It is home to the Goshen Carnegie Public Library, and the William Niolett House and Violett-Martin Gardens are listed on the National. Register of historic Places.

Geography

Goshen is located at 41°3455N 85°5012W. The Elkhart River winds its way through the city and through a dam on the south side making the Goshen Dam Pond. Rock Run Creek also runs through town. The city is divided east/west by Main Street and north/south by Lincoln Avenue. Goshen outranked Phoenix, Sacramento, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Denver with its 2019 production of 116 watts of solar power per capita. City government has responded to the increase in severe weather such as flooding, hail, and heavy rains with measures including stormwater management, and "an initiative to grow the towns tree canopy by 45%." Goshen completed 92 solar projects in 2019. In February 2018, the ElkhART River flooded as a result of heavy rain and snowmelt. The river rose to a record 13.2 feet, damaging more than 300 structures and prompting evacuations. The town has a total area of 16.59 square miles (42.97 km²) of which 16.23 square miles of land is land and 0.36square miles (0.93km²) is water. It has a population of 2,788. It is located on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ “Rough and Ready’s’’ Red Line,” which runs from San Antonio to Fort Worth. The Red Line runs from Fort Worth to Goshen.

The racial makeup of the city was 78.2% White, 2.6% African American, 0.5% Native American, 1.2%. Asian, 14.8% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Jeremy Stutsman, a member of the Democratic Party, is the incumbent Mayor of Goshens. He has been in office since 2008. He is a member. of the Democratic Party. He was elected to office in 2008 and has been there since. Since 2008, he has been the mayor. He had been elected in 2008, and was elected in 2010. He also served as the city council president in 2010 and 2011. He served as mayor in 2012 and 2013, and again in 2014 and 2015. He currently serves as the mayor for a third term. Goshen Community Schools serves the portion of the city in Elkhart Township. In 2012, U.S. News & World Report ranked Goshen High School as the 12th best high school in Indiana and the top 6% of high schools in the country. Goshen College, located on the south side of town, has an enrollment of approximately 800, with 40% male and 60% female. The town has a free lending library, the Goshen Public Library. Small parts of Goshen are covered by several other school districts, including Fairfield Community Schools, Middlebury Community schools, Concord Community Schools and WaNee Community Schools. Also, Bethany Christian Schools, a private Christian school for grades 4-12, is located in Goshen. For the 2017-2018 year, tuition and fees for the 2017 2018 year were $33,200. Transportation

Goshen Municipal Airport is a public-use airport located about 3.5 miles southeast of downtown Goshen. The closest airports with regularly scheduled commercial service are South Bend International Airport and Fort Wayne International Airport. O'Hare International Airport in Chicago is about 141 miles (227 km) away. The Interurban Trolley bus connects Goshen to the nearby city of Elkhart and the unincorporated town of Dunlap via Concord and Elkharts routes. Riders can also transfer to the North Pointe and Bittersweet/Mishawaka routes, which connect to the city of Mishawaka and town of Osceola. The bus also connects to the Capitol Limited and Lake Shore Limited trains, as well as TRANSPO Route 9 to the South Shore Line's South Bend international airport station. The Goshen Board of Aviation Commissioners owns the airport, and it is run by the Goshen City Board of Mayor and Aldermen. The airport was built in the early 1900s and is the only one of its kind in the state. It was named after Goshen, Indiana, a town that was once part of the U.S. state of Indiana. It is located on the Indiana Turnpike, which runs through Goshen and into the town of Fort Wayne. Goshen is also home to the University of Indiana, which was founded in 1883. The University of Iowa has a chapter of the American College of Aeronautics and Astronautics, which opened in 1894.

Recreation

Goshen has seven parks and has a few different greenways and trails winding through the city. The Pumpkinvine Nature Trail runs from Goshen to Middlebury and Shipshewana, along the former Pumpkin Vine Railroad. The Elkhart County 4-H Fair is held in the city in late July. The Goshen Air Show is also an annual event that takes place at the Goshen Municipal Airport. In 2007, Downtown Goshen, Inc., a public-private partnership formed from the merger of Face of the City and the Downtown Action Team, started a First Fridays program. Occurring year round, First Fridays happens on the first Friday of each month with stores open until 9, music and other entertainment, and other events occurring within Goshen's downtown district. One favorite pastime of Goshen residents is driving cars. The city is home to the largest county fair in Indiana and one of the largest 4- H County Fairs in the United States. It is also the location of the Indiana State Fair, which is held every year in June. The state fair is the largest state fair in the U.S. and is held at the state fairgrounds in Goshen. It runs until the end of August. The fair is also held in Indiana's capital city, Bloomington, Indiana, and is the state's oldest county fair. It was founded in 1872 and is still going strong today. The county fair is held on the grounds of the former Goshen High School.

Lonesome Jim (2005) which was written by former resident James Strouse, directed by Steve Buscemi and starred Liv Tyler and Casey Affleck, was shot in Goshen. The south side of the store is rumored to be the first Wal-mart in the United States to provide a covered stable for its frequent Amish customers.
