Van Wert is a city in and the county seat of Van Wert County, Ohio, United States. The municipality is located in northwestern Ohio approximately 77 mi (123 km) SW of Toledo and 34 mi (54 km) SE of Fort Wayne, Indiana. It is named for Isaac Van Wart, one of the captors of Major John André in the American Revolutionary War. It was the birthplace of aviation pioneer Walter Hinton and the famous baritone Charles W. Clark. At one point it was the only place in the world producing Liederkranz cheese. It also has a thriving community art center, the Wassenburg Art Center, and the award-winning Van Wernt Civic Theatre. The home office of Central Insurance Companies is Located in Van WERNT. The city has a total area of 7.61 square miles (19.71 km²), of which 7.33 sq miles (18.98 km²) is land and 0.28sq miles (0.73 sq km) is water. The population was 10,846 at the 2010 census. The emergency warning system is credited with saving many lives after several cars were thrown into a movie theatre that had been packed with people just minutes earlier. History

Van Wert was surveyed in 1824 by Captain James Riley, who was contracted by the government to survey lands purchased from Native Americans under a treaty in 1818. It was incorporated as a town in 1848 and was chartered as a city in 1903. The people of Van Wert (400 of which called themselves "Cheesemakers") contributed to the town of Vimoutiers, Orne, Lower Normandy, France with help after it was mistakenly bombed by the US Air Force during World War II. They volunteered to pay for the replacement of Marie Harel's statue in 1953. Vimoutier is a centre for local making of Camembert, Livarot and Pont-l'Évêque cheeses. The town's emergency warning system is credited with saving many lives after several cars were thrown into a movie theatre that had been packed with people just minutes earlier. On November 10, 2002, an F4 tornado ripped through the town, killing two people. This was one of many tornado touchdowns during the 2002 Veterans Day Weekend tornado outbreak. It is also the birthplace of aviation pioneer Walter Hinton and the famous baritone Charles W. Clark. At one point, Van Werst was the only place in the world producing Liederkranz cheese. This pungent dairy product was made at the now-closed Borden plant. It's recorded by a plaque in the market square of Vim outiers. It can be found on the map of the Normandy region.

Geography

Van Wert is located at 40°524N 84°350W (40.867863, -84.583461). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.61 square miles (19.71 km²) of which 7.33 square miles is land and 0.73 km² is water. The city is located on the Ohio River, which runs through the center of the city. Van Wert has a population of 2,816. It is the largest city in the Ohio Valley and the second largest in the state after Cincinnati. It has a latitude of 40.524N and a longitude of 84.350W. It was the site of the first recorded human settlement in the area in 1805. The town's name comes from the German word "van Wert" which means "the place" or "place of the river" or, more commonly, "the river valley" or the "river valley". It was named after the town of Wert, which was first recorded in 1806. It became the first city in Ohio to have a post office in 1807. It also was the first town in the United States to be named after a city, which dates back to 1805, and the first post office to be established in 1808. In 1809, the town was the location of the town's first recorded population of 1,068. It had a postcode of "Wert" (pronounced "wert").

The U.N. State Department has a training center in the area.

Education

Van Wert City Schools enrolls 2,027 students in public primary and secondary schools. The district operates 4 public schools including the Early Childhood Center (Pre-school-Kindergarten) and Van Wert Elementary School (1st-5th grades) The district recently built a new high school and middle school complex in 2007, and just opened a new elementary school next to the high school/middle school complex so all students are now in one area. Every year since 2005, van Wert Middle School has received the "National Schools to Watch" award. The main branch of the Brumback Library is located in the district's main building, the Goedde Building, which is also used as the Central Administrative Offices. The high school plays in the Western Buckeye League, an athletic body sanctioned by the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) The school also has a performing arts center, the Niswonger Performing Arts Center of Northwest Ohio, thanks to a private donation from a former student and high school alumnus, Scott Nis wonger. The school has a library, with a branch in the town's downtown area. The town also has its own high school, with the school's sports teams playing in the Ohio State High School League. The city has a high school gym, which was built in the 1970s and is used as a gym for the football and basketball teams. It is also the home of the Van Werth High School marching band.
