Sardinia is a village in Brown and Highland counties in the U.S. state of Ohio. The village's name is derived from the homonymous island in the Mediterranean Sea. Historically, Sardinia was a post village of Brown County, in Washington township, established in 1830. It is situated on the east fork of White Oak Creek, 12 miles (19 km) north-east of Georgetown, and 44 miles (71 km) east of Cincinnati. The population of Sardinia at the 2010 census was 980, with a total area of 1.24 square miles (3.21 km²) The village is located at 39°031N 83°4815W (39.008718, -83.804213), according to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total of 1,24 sq mi (3,21 km) of land. In 2000, there were 862 people, 328 households, and 230 families living in the village. In 2010, the population was 980 people, and the population density was 790.3 inhabitants per square mile (305.1/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.61% White, 0.23% Black or African American, and 1.16% from two or more races. The median age in thevillage was 31 years, with 33.1% of residents being under the age of 18; 28.6% were from 25 to 44; and 9.9% were 65 years of age or older.

History

Sardinia was a post village of Brown County, in Washington township, established in 1830. In 1860, Sardinia's population was 200 and Washington Township had a population of 1,300. It was a station on the Cincinnati & Eastern Railroad, today the Cincinnati Eastern Railroad (CCET) Sardinia is located on the east fork of White Oak Creek, 12 miles (19 km) north-east of Georgetown, and 44 miles (71 km) east of Cincinnati. The village's name is derived from the homonymous island in the Mediterranean Sea. In 1833, the village was laid out in 1833 and the post village was named after Sardinia, a town on the island of Corsica in the same region of the Mediterranean. The post village is now part of the city of Cincinnati, Ohio, and was once a part of Washington Township, in Brown County. It is now a suburb of Cincinnati and is home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Cincinnati Zoo and Cincinnati Children's Museum, as well as the Cincinnati Museum Center. Sardinia has a post office, which opened in 1830, and a post station, which was opened in 1860. It has been a station of the Cincinnati and Eastern Railroad since 1833. The station is still in use today, and is on the C&E's Cincinnati Eastern Railway, which runs from Cincinnati to Louisville, Kentucky, and the Louisville & Cincinnati Railway, from Louisville to Cincinnati. It also has a train yard, which is used by the C & E.

It means "small" or "sad" in Spanish, and "sordinia" means small island, or "snow" in English. It also means "sand" in the Spanish language, which is the name of a type of sand dune found in Sardinia and in other parts of the Adirondack region of the United States.
