Inez is a home rule-class city in and the county seat of Martin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 546 at the 2020 census. The Lincoln County Feud occurred in Lincoln County, West Virginia, during the 1880s. Inez is home to several industrial employers primarily focused on the area's robust energy market. Outside the city is another major regional employer, the Big Sandy facility of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. President Lyndon B. Johnson visited Inez in 1964, landing by helicopter with his party at an abandoned miniature golf course, to promote the War on Poverty. The U.S. Postal Service operates the Inez Post Office near Inez, in unincorporated Martin County. The Martin County School System serves Inez High School, Warfield Elementary, and Martin Middle School (MS-6-6) Inez has a library, which is also in Warfield, and a lending library in the former Warfield high school, which was closed in the 1990s. Innez has a reputation for being a hotbed of illegal activity. The town has a history of drug-related violence. It also has a long history of being a haven for drug-dealing criminals. It has been the site of a number of international drug-smuggling operations. It is also known as the birthplace of the Mexican drug cartel El Chapo and the drug-traffickers who carried out a series of murders in the city in the 1970s. In 1981, Inez was the location of one of the largest drug-sniffing operations in the United States, with a total of 1,000 people arrested. In 2002, the town had 1,200 drug-suspects. In 2007, it had 2,000 drug-users, the majority of whom were arrested for drug trafficking. In 2008, the number of drug traffickers in the town was at least 1,500. In 2009, the police department reported that the city had a record-breaking number of arrests for drug possession and distribution. In 2010, the state of New Mexico reported that there had been 1,800 drug-involved incidents in the state.
History
Eden, Kentucky, was named after Inez Frank, daughter of the Louisa, Kentucky postmaster. The Lincoln County Feud occurred in Lincoln County, West Virginia, during the 1880s. President Lyndon B. Johnson visited Inez in 1964, landing by helicopter with his party at an abandoned miniature golf course, to promote the War on Poverty. In March 1995, songwriter and musician John Hartford and historian/author Brandon Kirk visited inez as part of their research on the feud. In October 1889, Milt Haley and Green McCoy, two West Virginia fugitives, were captured and subsequently held at the Martin County Jail. A West Virginia posse captured Haley and McCoy and lynched them at Green Shoal near Harts, West West Virginia. The name of the town is usually held to have been derived from that of Inz Frank, who was the daughter of Louisa Frank, the postmaster in neighboring Lawrence County. Inez is located in Martin County, which is part of the Eastern Seaboard region of the U.S. and is home to the University of Kentucky. The town has a population of about 2,000 people, about half of whom live in the town of Inez. It is the seat of government for Martin County and the county seat for the neighboring county of Lincoln County. It was originally called Arminta Ward's Bottom, but was renamed Eden by J.M.
