Newport is a home rule-class city at the confluence of the Ohio and Licking rivers in Campbell County, Kentucky. The population was 15,273 at the 2010 census. Newport is a major urban center of Northern Kentucky and part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area, which includes over two million residents. Newport was established as a town on December 14, 1795, and incorporated as a city on February 24, 1834. In May 1999 the $40-million Newport Aquarium opened, and the historic Posey Flats apartments were leveled in favor of the Newport on the Levee entertainment complex, which opened the following year. Today, Newport is becoming the entertainment community of the fast-growing Northern Kentucky area while its neighboring citiesBellevue and Covingtonbecome the business centers. In 2010, Newport successfully lobbied the state legislature for an exception to state law, which both required that a county seat be located in the center of the county, and that county business only be conducted at the county seat. In August 2011, the Supreme Court of Kentucky granted Newport equal status as a county. On November 24, 2010, the Kentucky General Assembly removed the Kentucky Courthouse from the appellate review decision, and Newport is now the only county seat of Campbell County. In November 2009, the state Supreme Court ruled that Alexandria is not a county county seat and that Newport is not an equal county. In the 19th century, the overwhelming majority of the population lived in Newport and the surrounding cities. Many citizens did not like traveling south to Alexandria to conduct county business, as southern Campbell County was primarily undeveloped.

History

Newport is the primary city name, but also Fort Thomas, Southgate, Wilder are acceptable city names or spellings, S Newport, So Newport, South Newport, Woodlawn on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. In 1997 plans for a 1,015-foot (309 m) structure called the "Millennium Tower" were revealed. The tower's main selling point was that building it would be financed by private money, as opposed to taxpayer money. The site for the tower was expected to be completed by 2003, but investors later pulled out and no construction was done. In 2009, General Assembly ruled that Alexandria was not a county seat, and Newport was granted equal county seat status. On August 25, 2011, the Supreme Court of Kentucky denied review of the decision, and granted Newport equal county status. In 2010, the Kentucky General Assembly removed the District and Commission from the Courthouse Commission, but left the taxing authority intact. In 2012, Newport was the third largest city in Kentucky, after Covingon and Louisville, although Newport and Cvington were rightly considered satellites of Cincinnati.

Geography

Newport is located at 39°519N 84°2925W (39.088661, 84.490206).According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.0 square miles (7.8 km²) Newport is located within the Bluegrass region found in the Upland South of the United States of America. Newport is also commonly referred to as being located in the Midwest. Either description is acceptable, as Newport is at the boundary between those regions. Newport has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen "Cfa" 4.2). Newport is within a transition zone and is proximal to the extreme northern limit of the humid subtropeical climate of the Southeastern United States. It has an average annual rainfall of 2.7 square miles (3.0 square km) and an average yearly temperature of 1.8 °F (1.9 °C). It has a population of 2,732 (1,822  square km). Newport has an estimated population of 3,722 (1 823 square miles (3,824 km) and a population density of 1,823 (1 1/2 sq mi) per square mile (2.7/sq km²). It is located on the Ohio River, which flows through the city. Newport's population is 2,816 (1 2/2) according to the 2010 Census.

The city is located on the U.S.-Mexico border and was once part of the United States Army Corps of Engineers. It was the site of the World War II-era Battle of the Bulge, which was fought from 1871 to 1875. It is now home to the University of Texas at San Antonio. The U.T. campus is located in the heart of the downtown area, and is a major tourist attraction. It has a population of about 15,000, making it one of the largest cities in the state.
