Dry Ridge is a home rule-class city in Grant County, Kentucky, in the United States. The population was 2,191 at the 2010 census, up from 1,995 at the 2000 census. From around 1910 to 1960, the city's economy was dominated by business related to its mineral water wells, purported to have healing properties. The community now known as Dry Ridge was settled about 1792 as "Campbell's Station" near a spring said to have medicinal qualities. Dry Ridge takes its name from a ridge surrounded by inns where travelers stopped for water before proceeding. The city is located north of the center of Grant County at 38°4056N 84°3547W (38.682242, -84.596370). It is bordered to the south by the city of Williamstown, the county seat. Interstate 75 passes through Dry Ridge, with access from Exit 159. I-75 leads north 35 miles (56 km) to Cincinnati and south 49 miles (79km) to Lexington. In 1937, a water distribution system was created with water from Williamstown's lake. In 2010, the median income for a household in the city was $30,647, and the median for a family was $32,202. About 21.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 39.0% of those under the age of 18 and 14.4% of people over 14 years of age. Mary Frances Penick, 19, best known for the song "The End of the World" is from Dry Ridge.

Dry Ridge is located north of the center of Grant County at 38°4056N 84°3547W (38.682242, -84.596370) It is bordered to the south by the city of Williamstown, the county seat. I-75 passes through Dry Ridge, with access from Exit 159. Dry Ridge has a total area of 4.6 square miles (11.8 km²), of which 0.03 square mile (0.09 km²) or 0.72% is water. It is located on the Ohio River, which runs through Grant County. The Ohio River is a tributary of the Little Ohio River. It runs north and south of the Dry Ridge area, leading north to Cincinnati and south to Lexington. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates Dry Ridge's population at 1,000 in 2010, down from 1,200 in 2000. The town has a population of 1,100 in 2000, up from 9,000 when the last census was conducted. The county seat of Dry Ridge is Williamstown; the town's population is 1,300. The village of Crittenden is in the north, and the town of Williamtown is the city's center. The area has a latitude of 38.4°N, a longitude of 84°W, and an area of 0.3 square miles, or 1.2 km². It has an elevation of 38°S, or 84°N.

History

Dry Ridge was settled about 1792 as "Campbell's Station" near a spring said to have medicinal qualities. During the early part of the 20th century, Dry Ridge was the home of Kentucky Carlsbad Mineral Water Bottling Company, and home of the Carls bad Hotel completed in 1911. The hotel was destroyed by fire on February 25, 1927. In 1937, a water distribution system was created with water from Williamstown, Kentucky's lake. The city is located on the Ohio River, which runs through the center of the town. The town has a population of about 2,000, the majority of whom live in or near the town of Dry Ridge. It is one of the smallest cities in Kentucky, with a population in excess of 1,000. The community is home to the University of Kentucky, which was founded in 1788. The university is located in the historic town of Williamstown. It was the first college in the state to be chartered in 1859. The University of Louisville was founded on the same site in 1881. The school was the site of the first public high school in the United States, which opened in 1883.
