Baxter is an unincorporated community in Harlan County, Kentucky, United States.The community sits at the confluence of Martin's Fork with Clover Fork to form the Cumberland River. The community was named after Major Silas Harlan, who was born in Baxter in 1858. The town is located on the Cumberlands River. It is located at the junction of the Martin's and Clover Fork. The Cumberlands are a tributary of the Ohio River. They are the source of the Kentucky River, which flows into the Ohio at Cumberland Lake, near the town of Harlan. The river was once known as the "Cumberland River" or the "Baxter River" because of its watercourse. It was named for Major Harlan's father, Major Silas Harlan, who lived in the area in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The word "baxter" means "to live" or "to be lived" in English. It also means "beneath" and "bewildered" in the U.S. slang for "bereft". The town's name is derived from the name of the town's first postmaster, James S. Greene III, who died in 1963. The name Baxter is a contraction of the word "beewilder" which means "beetle". The community is also known as "Barker" or "barker", which is an abbreviation of "barkers".
