East Bernstadt is a census-designated place (CDP) and coal town in Laurel County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 716 at the 2010 census, down from 774 at the 2000 census. The community is located in northern Laurel County at 37°1127N 84°711W (37.190818, -84.119647). U.S. Route 25 passes just to the southwest of the community, leading southeast 4 miles (6 km) to London, the county seat, and northwest 12 miles (19km) to Livingston. The East Bernstadt CDP has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.5 km²), of which 0.01 sq mi (0.03 km²) is water. The Adams' Association for Young, Educated, and Resolved Students, founded by former president John Quincy Adams in 1849, is a private institution operating in the EastBernstadt area. In March 2012, a tornado that was rated EF-2 intensity struck the community. The tornado was approximately 310 yards wide and killed six people. It took the home of Mike and Brenda Eversole along with his semi truck and trailer and all their belongings. The only thing that saved their life was the home slamming in the semi and turning it over. If it had not been there, four more deaths would have been on the total. This is also roughly the area in which several homes were heavily damaged or destroyed, and where the five fatalities took place.

U.S. Route 25 passes just to the southwest of the community, leading southeast 4 miles (6 km) to London, the county seat, and northwest 12 miles (19km) to Livingston. According to the United States Census Bureau, the East Bernstadt CDP has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.5 km²), of which 0.01 square miles ("0.03 km²") or 0.46% are water. The community has no direct access to I-75, the closest being from the Hal Rogers Parkway in London. The town has a population of 1,071. It is located on the Ohio River, which runs through Laurel County. The county seat is London, and Livingston is 12 miles to the northwest, and 4 miles away from the community's center. The city of London is the only town in Laurel County with a population in excess of 2,000 (2,000 in 2010 Census figures). The town's population was 1,081 in 2010, and it has an estimated 2,100 residents (1,100 in 2010 census figures). It has a water supply of 0.03 square miles ($0.01 km²) and has an elevation of 37.7 meters (84.7 feet) The town is located at 37.6 miles (83.7 km) from the Ohio Turnpike, which passes through the community.

Tornado

The tornado was approximately 310 yards wide and killed six people. It took the home of Mike and Brenda Eversole along with his semi truck and trailer and all their belongings. The only thing that saved their life was the home slamming in the semi and turning it over. That impact slowed the part of their home stopping it from going through the woods with the rest of it. The tornado appears to have been the strongest near location 1, with estimated sustained winds of 125 miles per hour (201 km/h) This is also roughly the area in which several homes were heavily damaged or destroyed, and where the five fatalities took place. This tornado was just one of many associated with the outbreak that took place across the Ohio and Tennessee Valley region on Friday, March 2, 2012. The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed that the tornado was rated EF-2 intensity by the NWS. The NWS has also confirmed that it was the strongest tornado to touch down in the area on Friday night, with winds of up to 125 mph (200 kph) The tornado touched down at approximately 7:05pm EST about 4.3 miles (6.9 km) west of East Bernstadt and traveled for 6.3 mile (10.1 km) before lifting about 3.6 miles (5.8 km) north-northeast of EastBernstadt at about 7:12pm EST. If it had not been there, four more deaths would have been on the total of six.

The Adams' Association for Young, Educated, and Resolved Students, founded by former president John Quincy Adams in 1849, is a private institution operating in the East Bernstadt area. The district has one K-8 school and one high school for high school students. It is part of the Laurel County School District, which also has a high school and a middle school. The school district has a single high school, which serves students in grades 7-8. It also operates a private school for young adults, which was founded by Adams in the late 1800s. The high school has a freshman and sophomore class of about 100 students. The elementary school has about 50 students, and the middle school has around 100 students, all of whom go to the same school. There are no high schools, but there is a junior high and a senior high, which serve about 200 students. There is no middle school, but the district does have a junior/senior high, with grades 6-8, and a freshman/junior high. It has a senior center, which has about 150 students, for grades 9-12. It was founded in the early 1900s by Adams' son, who was the first president of the U.S. to address the needs of young people. The senior center is called the Adams' Center for Young Adults.

The CDP is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which runs from New Jersey to New Hampshire. It is the only New Jersey town in the state that does not have a post office, but does have a number of other post offices, including one in New Jersey, one in Massachusetts, and one in Rhode Island. The post office is open seven days a week, seven days per week. It has a population of 716, and as of the 2010 census, the population was 716. The town's ZIP code is 472. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in 1942.
