Ooltewah ((listen) OO-tuh-wah) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hamilton County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 684 at the 2020 census. It is an enclave in the city of Collegedale. The former James County Courthouse located in the square in downtown Ooltewa is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The name may be derived from the Creek (Muscogee) words uwv-tawa (OO-U-TA-WA) "water town" and ultiwa (Creek) "principal ground" or "Owls Roost" (CREEK - Opv-Tawa OH-POO-TA -WA). Ooltewsah is located at 35°41N 85°453W (35.066834, -85.081421) The CDP has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km²), all land. OoltEWah was the county seat of James County, a former Tennessee county that went bankrupt in 1919 and was subsequently incorporated into Hamilton County. A prominent Southern Unionist and leader in the East Tennessee bridge-burning conspiracy, Alfred Cate (1822-1871), was a resident of O Holtewah. Cate and his men destroyed three Chattanooga-area railroad bridges on the night of November 8, 1861, in hopes of paving the way for a Union invasion of East Tennessee.

History

Ooltewah is the primary city name, but also College Dale are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Ooltewah, Tennessee. Ooltewah was the county seat of James County, a former Tennessee county that went bankrupt in 1919 and was subsequently incorporated into Hamilton County. Alfred Cate (1822-1871) was a prominent Southern Unionist and leader in the East Tennessee bridge-burning conspiracy. The former James County Courthouse is the community's major landmark. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On November 24, 1863, the 4th Michigan Cavalry captured seventeen Confederates, including two officers, and destroyed a train of four wagons. On the next day, they destroyed the O Holtewah railroad bridge, burned 4,000 pounds of flour, and captured a Confederate Lieutenant Colonel before moving on to Cleveland before nightfall. The community is located on the banks of the Tennessee River, which runs through the center of the town. The town was once known as the "Little River" and was home to a smallpox hospital. It has a population of about 1,000 people, with most of its residents living in or near the town square. It was the site of a Civil War battle between the U.S. Army and the Confederate States of Tennessee in 1863. The Ooltewa River is a tributary of the Cumberland River, and runs into the Little Tennessee River in the town of Chattanooga. The river is a major source of water supply for the city of Chattanooga and its surrounding areas. It also provides a source of drinking water for the community.

The CDP is located on the Ohio River, which flows through the town. The town of Ooltewa is located in the Ohio Valley, which runs through the center of the city. The Ohio River is a tributary of the Little Ohio River. The Little Ohio and Ohio rivers flow through the city, and connect to the Ohio Turnpike and Ohio River in the north and the Ohio valley in the south. It is located near the junction of the Ohio, Ohio, and Ohio Rivers, which run into the Ohio and Pennsylvania Rivers. In the north, the river runs through Ooltewsah. The river is also known as the "Ohio River" or the "Phenomenon River" because of its resemblance to the name of a Native American tribe, the "Ooltewshah" tribe of the same name. It also is known as "The River River" due to its proximity to the Great Lakes region of the United States, which is also called the "Great Lakes" or "The Great Lakes" by the "U.S." "The river" is known for being one of the few places in the state to have a continuous river system. It has a population of 1,000.

Name

The word Ooltewah is possibly derived from ultiwa, a Cherokee cognate of the Muscogee word italwa, meaning "principal ground" It is perhaps derived from the Creek (Muscogee) words uwv-tawa (OO-U-TA-WA) "water town" Locals attribute the name as translated "Owls Nest" or "Olls Roost" (CREEK - Opv- tawa OH-POO- TA-WA). It is also known as "Otolewah" by some locals, and "Ooltewa" by others. It is the name of a town on the banks of the Ohio River. The town's name is also used to refer to a Native American tribe, the Otolewa. The name is a Cherokee word that means "princess", or "pristine" or  "princely". The town is also called "Owl's Nest" by locals. It was named after the Native Americans who lived in the area, who called the town a "nest" or a "roost" The town was named for the Owls, who were said to have lived there for generations. The word "Ollolowah" means "a place of refuge" in the Cherokee language. It may also mean "the place of the dead," or "the dead" in other Cherokee dialects. It has also been used as a name for a place of burial, such as the Ollolawah Cemetery, which was built in the 1800s.
