South Bay is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. It is the westernmost municipality in the South Florida metropolitan area. The population was 4,876 at the 2010 census. As of 2018, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau was 5,185. South Bay was named for its location on Lake Okeechobee. The town was incorporated in 1941. The city has a total area of 3.7 square miles (9.6 km²), including 2.7 sq miles (7.0 km²) of land and 1.0 sq mi (26.95km) of water. Two major roads, East-West State Road 80 and North-South State Road 27, intersect in the town. The City of South Bay has a website, City-Data.com, with more than 1.5 million visitors per month. The mayor is Clarence E. Anthony, who was in office from 1984 to 2008. In 2000, speakers of English made up 77.76% of the city's population, while a mother tongue accounted for 21.51% of residents. The current estimates place South Bay's population in the incorporated city limits at more than 4,000 people, while surrounding areas increase the population figures to more than 54,000 in a 25-mile (40 km) radius and more than1.4 million in a 50- miles (80km) radius. The average household size was 3.39 and the average family size was3.76.

History

South Bay was named for its location on Lake Okeechobee. The town was incorporated in 1941. The first mayor of South Bay was Aubrey (a.k.a. "Orb") Walker, who survived the great hurricane of 1928 by gathering his family members onto a boat in the canal. South Bay is located in the Florida panhandle, south of Tallahassee and east of Miami. The city is home to the Florida Panhandle Museum and the Florida Museum of History and Science, which dates back to the 18th century. The museum is located on the shores of Lake Okessee. The Museum's collection of photographs includes the first South Bay home, which was built in 1805. The South Bay Museum is located at the base of the Okeecobee Falls, which is located near the town's southern tip. It is also known as the "World's Largest Museum of Photography" and has a collection of more than 20,000 photographs. The most recent exhibit is a photo collection of the South Bay Historical Society, which includes the city's first mayor, Aubrey Walker, and his brother, Haughty D. Walker, from 1928. The collection is called "South Bay: The Great Hurricane of 1928" and is on display at the Museum's Museum of Photographs and Art, which also houses the Museum of Florida History, which opened in 1928. It was the first place in the U.S. to be named after a hurricane, and the first town to be incorporated.

Geography

South Bay is located at 26°3959N 80°438W (26.666487, 80.718985), near the southern bank of Lake Okeechobee. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.7 square miles (9.6 km²), including 2.7 sq miles (7.0 km²) of land and 1.0 square mile (2.6km²), of which (26%) is water. The Lake OKEECHobee Scenic Trail runs through South Bay. The city is home to the South Bay High School football team, which won the state championship in 2010. The school's football team also won the national championship in 2008 and 2009. The football team won the title in 2010 and 2011, and the state title in 2012 and 2013. South Bay is a member of the National Football League and the Florida State Football League. It has a population of 3,715. It is located in the southern part of the state, near the lake's southern bank. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city's population at 3,611.
