Clewiston is a city in Hendry County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,327 at the 2020 census, up from 7,155 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the south bank of Lake Okeechobee. The area has been home to Seminole tribe members and sugar plantations, with the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Seminole Indian Museum located 32 miles (51 km) south of the city. Clewiston became noted for its sport fishing, particularly of largemouth bass, particularly in the 1920s and 1930s. In 2008, the state of Florida agreed to buy the US Sugar Corporation's 187,000 acres (76,000 ha) of farmland for $1.75 billion. Over the next seven crop cycles, the farmland would be leased back from the state to US Sugar for $60 million. It would then be converted into reservoirs and water-filtering areas as part of the ongoing restoration of the Everglades ecosystem. In 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau said the city has a total area of 4.7 square miles (12.2 km²), of which 0.027 square miles [0.07 km²], or 0.54%, are water. The lake is 80 miles (130 km) northwest of Fort Lauderdale on the Atlantic coastal plain. The City is home to Billie Swamp Safari, the Clewerson Museum and the Dixie Crystal Theatre. It is located in the northeast corner of Hendries County at 26°4512N 80°5601W.
History
Clewiston is a city in Florida. It is known for its sport fishing, particularly largemouth bass. Large sugar plantations were established around Lake Okeechobee. The US Sugar Corporation is the dominant manufacturer in Clewiston. In 2008, the state of Florida planned to buy the company's 187,000 acres (76,000 ha) of farmland for $1.75 billion. On November 11, the plan was scaled back to £1.34 billion. This would allow the company to remain in business and leave open the possibility of preserving its 1,700 jobs. Over the next seven crop cycles, the farmland would be leased back from the state to US Sugar for $60 million. It would then be converted into reservoirs and water-filtering areas as part of the ongoing restoration of the Everglades ecosystem. The city is home to the Florida State Museum, which was founded in 1881. The museum is located in the town's historic center, which dates back to the 18th century. The town is also home to Florida's oldest public library, the Florida Museum of History and Science, which opened in 1883. It was also the site of Florida's first state fair, which took place in 1887. The state's first public high school was opened in 1888. The first city hall was built in 1891, and the city was incorporated in 1925. It became known as "America's Sweetest Town" in the 1950s and 1960s, when citrus, vegetables and cattle were also important.

Clewiston is located in the northeast corner of Hendry County at 26°4512N 80°5601W, on the southwestern shore of Lake Okeechobee. It is part of the Florida Heartland region. It is located near the lake's southwestern shore, near the town of LaBelle, and near Moore Haven, Moore Haven and South Bay. The nearest city is Moore Haven at 15 miles (24 km) to the north, and the nearest town to the south is South Bay at 16 miles (26 km). The town's population is about 1,000, with the majority of its residents living in and around the city of La Belle. It also has a small population in the nearby town of South Bay, which is about 2 miles (4 km) away. The community is located along Florida State Road 80, which runs through the town.

The racial makeup of the city was 75.79% White, 10.93% African American, 0.39% Native American, 1.18% Asian, 9.64% from other races, and 2.07% from two or more races. The town has a population density of 1,381.0 inhabitants per square mile (533.2/km²). It is located near the junction of the Mississippi, Red, and Arkansas rivers. The Arkansas River flows into the Arkansas River from the north.
Education
The Clewiston Library, Barron Library and Harlem Library are part of the Hendry County Library Cooperative in Florida. There is a tribal school affiliated with the Bureau of Indian Education, Ahfachkee School, that is outside the city limits, on the Big Cypress Reservation. There are three public schools in the area: Eastside Elementary, Westside Elementary and Central Elementary. Private schools include Clewiston Christian School and Clewisticon High School. The Clewistson Library recently received a grant to digitize their local newspaper, The CleWiston News. The digital versions will be added to the free, open access Florida Digital Newspaper Library. The library also recently sought and received an LSTA grant todigitize theirlocal newspaper, the ClewISTON NATION. It is located in a former school building which also houses the Harlem Academy daycare center and its specialty is a growing African American collection. The Barron Library collects genealogical materials. The Harlem Library has a Florida room to house historical reference material and books pertinent to local and state history. It also has a special area of focus for African American and African American material. The public library cooperative includes three libraries in the county: the Cle wiston library, the Barron library and the Harlem Library. It provides materials and general information, and each library has a secondary individualized areas of focus. The county's public schools are operated by Hendry county schools. The school district has a budget of $1.2 million.
