Boynton Beach is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 68,217 at the 2010 census. In 2019, the city had an estimated population of 78,679 according to the University of Florida, Bureau of Economic and Business Research. The city is a principal city of the Miami metropolitan area, which was home to 6,138,333 people at the 2020 census. Ty Penserga was elected mayor of Boynton Beach in Florida, making him the first openly gay mayor of the city as well as the first out LGBTQ Asian American mayor elected in Florida state history. He was sworn into office by Attorney General Dave Aronberg on March 8, 2022. The name "Boynton beach" was first used by a community that broke off from the Town of Boyton in 1931. In 1939, that community changed its name to "Ocean Ridge" while The Town ofBoynton took the name " boynton Beach" in 1941. In the mid-1990s, the park underwent a major renovation during which the boardwalk was rebuilt out of recycled plastic. In 2011 theBoardwalk was renovated again, replacing the plastic with ipe (pronounced ee-pay) wood (commonly known as Brazilian walnut). In 2012 improvements were made to the buildings along the board walk, including total refurbishment of the restrooms. The beach casino was built in 1928 and featured a large dining hall, locker rooms and showers. The casino was demolished in 1967 and the property remained part of the beach park.

History

Boynton Beach is the primary city name, but also Briny Breezes, Ocean Ridge are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Boynton Beach. Boynton Beach was founded on September 26, 1898 when Byrd Spilman Dewey and her husband Fred S. Dewey filed the original plat in the Dade County courthouse. The town was incorporated in 1920 as the Town of Boynton. Ty Penserga was elected mayor on March 8 2022, making him the first openly gay mayor of the city as well as the first out LGBTQ Asian American mayor elected in Florida state history. Hurricane Wilma struck Boynton Beach on October 24, 2005, causing widespread damage to homes and businesses. In 2006, the city government authorized the demolition of the historic Seaboard rail station, which had survived intact in private hands since passenger service to the station halted in 1971. In 2011 the boardwalk was renovated again, replacing the plastic with ipe (pronounced ee-pay) wood (commonly known as Brazilian walnut). In 2012 improvements were made to the buildings along the board walk, including total refurbishment of the restrooms. In 2001, The Palm Beach Post voted Oceanfront Park the best family beach in Palm Beach County. Crime

The crime rate started decreasing in 2017 and hit its lowest number in 20 years in 2020. Violent crime, which includes murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, decreased 8.5 percent. Property crime, including burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft, dropped by 32.2 percent. Boynton Beach Police Chief Michael G. Gregory attributed the decrease to focused efforts, an all-hands-on-deck approach and "using a multitude of tactics and crime fighting strategies that are constantly evolving based on crime patterns". In 2009, countywide gang violence had fallen three percent. In 2012, Mayor Jose Rodriguez was suspended from office by the state governor for trying to influence a police investigation into his personal affairs. The city's crime rate decreased by 28 percent in the city compared to 2019 and 64 percent compared to 2001. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement's 2020 Annual Crime Report, the total crime volume dropped 14.1 percent in 2019 compared to 2000. The crime rate in Palm Beach County dropped by 3 percent in 2009 compared to 2002. In 2007, there were ten known operating gangs, including the notorious South Florida Haitian Zoe Pound gang. As of 2007, the city had a crime rate of 14.3 percent. The number of murders in the county dropped by 8.4 percent in 2008 compared to the previous year. Demographics

As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 80,380 people, 31,863 households, and 17,482 families residing in the city. The city's population was spread out, with 19.9% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 25. 8% who were 65 years of age or older. In 2000, native speakers of English accounted for 80.09% of all residents, while speakers of French Creole comprised 7.51%, Spanish was at 7.30%, French consisted of 1.02%, Italian at 0.97%, and German made up 0.87% of the population. In 2021 the median income was $73,083, and the per capita income for the city was $22,573. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was2.87. Boynton Beach is served by the School District of Palm Beach County. As of 2006, it was the fifth largest school district in Florida and the twelfth largest in the United States. Boynton Beach has seven elementary schools and two middle schools. It also has a high school and a charter high school. It is one of the fastest-growing counties in Florida, according to the Florida Department of Education. The city has a population of 1.2 million. It has a median household income of $60,000. It had a population growth rate of 0.7% in the year of 2010, the highest of any U.S. county. The town is located on Florida's Atlantic coast, near the tip of the Florida isle of Beverly Palm Beach and the State Line of Florida is just south of the Island of Jupiter and Sebastian Pier Pleasants is on the opposite coast. The city is also home to the University of Florida at Manatee and Florida State University. It is the largest city in the state with a population of 1.3 million. The City of Palm Beach is home to more than 100,000 people, the majority of whom live in the City of Boynton beach. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in 1945.

Public transportation

Boynton Beach is served by a Tri-Rail station of the same name linking Boynton Beach to West Palm Beach to the north and Miami to the south. It is also serviced by local buses provided by PalmTran. The city is located on the Florida Turnpike, which runs between Miami and Palm Beach. The turnpike is one of the busiest in the state, connecting the city with Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, and West Palm beach. The Turnpikes are also the busiest roadways in the city, linking the city to Miami and the rest of the South Florida peninsula. The town has a population of 1.2 million, with the majority of its residents living in the central area of the city. It also has a large percentage of residents who live outside the city limits, particularly in the south and west. The majority of the town's residents live in the coastal areas, which are accessible by air, rail and road, and the city has a small percentage of people who live on the coast. The beach is also home to a number of beaches, many of which are undeveloped. The main beaches in the area are the Doral and the Dania Beach beaches, which lie to the west and south of the beach. It has a few beaches on the Atlantic Ocean, which is a popular tourist destination. The beaches are also known for their sand dunes, which can be seen from the city's main street, the Boynton Peninsula.

Controversy

Boynton Beach commissioned a mural showing three of its firefighters, unveiled in 2020. The mural depicted former fire chief Glenn Joseph, and former deputy fire chief Latosha Clemons, both of whom are Black. Clemons sued the city for defamation, libel and negligence. The city has since removed the mural and settled the lawsuit. Clemons was the city's first Black female fire fighter, and Joseph was the fire chief's deputy. The mural was commissioned for a window covering at a new fire station in Boynton Beach, Florida. It has since been removed and has been replaced with a new mural showing the current fire chief and two former deputy chief of the fire department. It will be unveiled at the new station in 2020, the city has said. It is expected to cost $1 million to $2 million to complete the project. It was commissioned by the city to raise money for a fire station expansion in the area. The project is set to be completed by the end of the year, according to the city. It's not known if the mural will be completed in time for the opening of the new firestation in 2020 or not.
