Shady Dale was founded ca. 1880 on the site of a former Creek Indian settlement. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Shady Dale as a town in 1889. The town is well known for an annual professional rodeo the first weekend in June each year since 1983. It is located in northeastern Jasper County at 33°2358N 83°3524W (33.399562, -83.589937) According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.89 square miles (2.3 km²), of which 1.8 acres (7,479 m2), or 0.33%, are water. The east side of town drains toward the Little River, a tributary of the Oconee River, while the west side drains to Murder Creek, atributaries of the Little river. The population of the town was 249 at the 2010 census, with the median income for a household in the town being $35,469. The per capita income for the town is $10,791, with about 10.5% of families and 14.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.3% of those under the age of eighteen and 19.2% ofThose 65 or over. The city is home to the Silver Bullet Hunting club, which is a hunting and fishing club for men and women of all ages and skill levels. It also has a church, the Providence Baptist Church.

History

Shady Dale was founded ca. 1880 on the site of a former Creek Indian settlement. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Shady Dale as a town in 1889. The name was descriptively applied to the town. The town is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. It is located in the state of Georgia, about 30 miles north of Atlanta. It has a population of about 2,000 people, about half of whom live in its downtown area. It was founded by the Creek Indians in 1880, and was named after a creek in the area. In 1889, it was incorporated as a city by the General Assembly of Georgia. It became a state town in 1894, and an incorporated city in 1891. Its population is about 1,000. It lies on the Chattooga River, which runs through the center of the town, and is about 20 miles from the city of Athens, the state's capital. The city's name is derived from the name of a nearby creek, which was once known as Shady Creek. It also means "shady" or "dale" in the local language, which means "dawning" and "dere" "Dale" means "hill" in English, and "dale" is the name given to the area's name by a local Native American tribe, the Shady Dales, who lived there in the late 1800s. The word "dales" is also used to refer to places in the U.S. that were once called "creeks" by the Cherokee.

The town has a total area of 0.89 square miles (2.3 km²), of which 1.8 acres (7,479 m2), or 0.33%, are water. The east side of town drains toward the Little River, a tributary of the Oconee River, while the west side drains to Murder Creek. The city is home to the Silver Bullet Hunting club, which was founded in the early 1900s. It is located on Georgia State Route 83, which leads northeast 17 miles (27 km) to Madison and southwest 8 miles (13km) to Monticello, the Jasper county seat. GA 142 leads northwest 11 miles (18 km)to Newborn and southeast 9 miles (14 km), to Willard, and to Shady Dale, which is on the Georgia State Highway System. It has a population of 1,071. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the town's population to be 1,081. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in World War I. The Battle was fought between the United States and the Soviet Union between April 25, 1941 and April 26, 1941. The battle was won by the Soviet Army, and the battle was followed by the American Civil War, which ended in 1945.

Arts and culture

The Jasper County rodeo has been going since 1983. The rodeo draws champion cowboys and cowgirls from all over the United States. The event is produced by Walton No. 200 and Jasper No. 50 Masonic Lodges of Jasper County with proceeds benefiting several Masonic charities. The entire town comes to life with a rodeo parade, wagon train ride and community festival.
