The city of Dahlonega is the county seat of Lumpkin County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 5,242, and in 2018 the population was estimated to be 6,884. The city was named "Talonega" by the Georgia General Assembly on December 21st, 1833. The name was changed from Talonega to "Dahlonega", from the Cherokee-language word Dalonige, meaning "yellow" or "gold". The city is located at the north end of Georgia highway 400, a freeway which connects Dahl onega to Atlanta. DahloneGA was the site of the first major Gold Rush in the United States beginning in 1829. It was named as one of the best places to retire by the publication Real Estate Scorecard. In 1849, when local gold miners were considering heading west to join the California Gold Rush, Dr. Matthew Fleming Stephenson tried to persuade them to stay in Dahlonegas. The town was originally built in 1836 as the Lumpkins County Courthouse. It is located in the middle of the public square, and was originally known as the Dahlonga Gold Museum Historic Site. It has been misquoted to the more well known "Thar's gold in them thar hills" over the years. The proper pronunciation of the city is (Dah-loe-nee-gee or Dah-lone-gay) in the Western Dialect of the Cherokee language. It does not mean gold but it simply means, Yellow.
The Georgia Gold Rush
In 1829, the first documented discovery of gold was made in Georgia. Thousands of would be get rich quick men flooded into the mountains looking for the yellow metal in the creeks and rivers. By 1831, Governor Gilmer of Georgia realized that it was impossible to remove the thousands of miners who had intruded into the Cherokee Nation. Gilmer saw an opportunity to claim the remaining Cherokee lands as part of Georgia. In 1832, the Georgia legislature voted to create ten new counties out of the former Cherokee Nation without regard to their sovereignty. Lumpkin County named after Governor Wilson Lumpkin, was created in December 1832. A year later the town of Taloneka or Talonega was named as the new county seat on December 21st, 1833. The spelling of the Cherokee word Da-lo-ni-ge-i was disputed by early correspondents; Featherstonhough, for example, wrote it as "Tahlonekay". The proper pronunciation of Dahlonega is (Dah-loe-nee-gee or Dah-lone-gay) in the Western Dialect of the Cherokee language. Da-Lo-Ni-ge'i does not mean gold but it simply means, Yellow. The spelling was later changed to Dahlonega, derived from the Cherokeeword meaning "yellow." The Georgia Gold Rush was the most successful gold rush in American history. It lasted from 1829-1830.
Naming the city
The city was named "Talonega" by the Georgia General Assembly on December 21, 1833. The name was changed from Talonega on December 25, 1837 to "Dahlonega", from the Cherokee-language word Dalonige, meaning "yellow" or "gold" The city is named after a Cherokee word for yellow or gold, which is the city's official name. The city's nickname is Dahlonega, which means "yellow or gold" in the Cherokee language. It is also known as "The City of Gold" by locals. It was named after the Cherokee word "Dalonige", which means yellow or golden. The town's name was first used in 1833, when it was named for a gold mine in the area. It became a city in 1837, when the city was given its current name by the General Assembly. It has been named for the town's founder, William Dahl, since 1837. It also has been known as the "City of the Gold" since 1838, when its name was used to refer to a gold mining site in the region. The current name is "The Town of The Gold" in honor of the gold mine, which was founded in 1838. It's also called the "Town of the Green River" by local residents, and the "Green River River" for the river that runs through the city. Its name means "the Green River", which is a tributary of the Black River.
The Dahlonega Branch Mint
The Dahlonega branch mint was built in 1838 and operated from 1838 to 1861. The building served as a barracks for US troops garrisoned here, and as a school for freed black students. In 1873, the newly founded North Georgia Agricultural College, opened its doors from the ashes of the original DahloneGA Branch Mint. After the end of the Civil War in 1865, the Dahlonegas Branch mint remained closed. The University of North Georgia was founded in 1873 from the remains of the mint building. The mint was a small operation, usually accounting for only a small fraction of the gold coinage minted annually in the US. As a result, surviving Dahl onega coinage is today highly prized in American numismatics. The U.S. government had established a mint in San Francisco to handle the national needs of coin minting. Given the large amount of gold discovered in California from the late 1840s on, the San Francisco and Philadelphia mints handled the national Needs of Coin minting in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The median home price is the middle value when you arrange all the sales prices of homes from lowest to highest. This is a better indicator than the average, because the median is not changed as much by a few unusually high or low values. The property tax rate of $6.94 shown here is the rate per $1,000 of home value. If for simplification for example the tax rate is $14.00 and the home value is $250,000, the property tax would be $14.00 x ($250,000/1000), or $3500. This is the 'effective' tax rate.
