Alto is a town in Banks and Habersham counties in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the town had a population of 1,172, up from 876 at the 2000 census. Alto was so named on account of its (relatively) lofty elevation (1,394 feet above mean sea level). A post office called Alto has been in operation since 1879. The town incorporated in 1895. The Georgia Department of Corrections operates the Arrendale State Prison in unincorporated Haberham County, near Alto. History

Alto was so named on account of its (relatively) lofty elevation (1,394 feet above mean sea level) A post office called Alto has been in operation since 1879. The town incorporated in 1895. It is located in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. It has a population of about 2,000 people. It was founded in 1879, and was named after an Alto, a town in the state of New Mexico, which was also named for the Alto River, a tributary of the Colorado River. The Alto River runs through the center of the town, and the town was once known as "Alto's River" The town's name means "the river that runs through Alto" in Spanish. It also means "already there" or "the place where the river meets the river". It was named for its elevation of 1,394ft (394m) at the time of its founding. It became a U.S. state in 1895, and incorporated as a city in 1901. It had a post office in Alto since 1878. It received its first postcard in 1878, and its name was changed to Alto in 1881. It got its current name from the town of Alto, California, which is located on the San Francisco River, about two miles south of the city of San Francisco. In the 19th century, it was known as "Alto" or "Alton" because of its name for the town's first inhabitants, who lived in nearby Alto, New Mexico. The name was later changed to "Alonzo" by the townspeople. It now has the same name, but with a different spelling, as it was once called "Alonso" by its residents. It's also known as 'Alto' or 'Alton' by some residents, due to its location on the Pacific Coast. It had a post office until the 1950s, when it was replaced by the name 'Alonso', and later by 'Alone' by the city of Alton.

The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 106.6 males. The average household size was 2.88 and the average family size was 3.35. the town's median income was $30,750, and the median income for a family was $36,094. Below the poverty line were 15.6% of people, 11.2% of families, and 12.2%. of those under 18 and 15. 6% of those over 64. The per capita income for the town is $11,434. The town is located on the U.S.-Mexico border and is located near the border of the state of New Mexico. It is the only town in the state with a population of more than 1,000.

Government and infrastructure

The government for the town of Alto is housed in a structure with an unusual history. When the new Cornelia Bank was built in nearby Cornelia in the late 1970s, the small building housing the old remote drive-in teller windows was moved to its current location on Georgia Hwy 441. The Georgia Department of Corrections operates the Arrendale State Prison in unincorporated Habersham County, near Alto. The small building was converted for office use from the Riegel Textile Mill (now Mt. Vernon Mills) in Alto and converted to a government building in the early 1980s. It is located on a lot across Georgia H Highway 441 from the former Riegel Mill. The building is now home to the town's government and public services. It was moved from its original location in the 1970s when the new bank was built and converted into an office building. It has been in the same location since the late 1980s and is on the same lot as the prison, which is now in Alto, Georgia. The prison is in the uninc incorporated part of the county, and is run by the Department of Correctional Services. The state of Georgia operates a state prison in the town, and the prison is located in the neighboring town of Alma, Georgia, near the city of Alma. The town has a population of about 2,000 people, about half of whom live in the Alto section of Habershan County. The jail is located near the town and is open to the public.
