Millen was first settled in 1835 along the border of what was then Burke and Screven counties. It was originally named "79" due to its approximate distance in miles from the coastal city of Savannah. During the Civil War, a site for a prisoner-of-war camp to house Union soldiers was chosen about five miles from Millen's Junction. In 1881, the city of Millen was incorporated by an act of the Georgia State Legislature, becoming the county seat of the newly created Jenkins County in 1905. The summer of 1919 was called the Red Summer due to a number of race riots throughout America. A number of people were killed in Millen during the Jenkins County, Georgia, riot of 1919. Millen is the only incorporated municipality in Jenkins County. It is located on the east side of the Ogeechee River. The city is intersected by U.S. Route 25 and State Route 17, and the proposed Interstate 3 will pass nearby. According to the United States Census Bureau, Millen has a total area of 3.6 square miles (9.3 km²), of which 0.02 square miles (0.06 km²) are water. In the 2020 United States census, there were 2,966 people, 1,113 households, and 563 families residing in the city. There were 1,567 housing units at an average density of 433.9 per square mile (167.5/km²).

History

Millen is the primary city name, but also Perkins are acceptable city names or spellings, Birdsville, Butts, Emmalane, Scarboro, Thrift on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Millen, Georgia. Millen was first settled in 1835 along the border of what was then Burke and Screven counties. It was originally named "79" due to its approximate distance in miles from the coastal city of Savannah. Planters cultivated cotton as a commodity crop with the use of enslaved Africans. In 1881, the city of Millen was incorporated by an act of the Georgia State Legislature, becoming the county seat of the newly created Jenkins County in 1905. The Downtown Millen Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. In 1919, white mobs burned down and killed a number of people in Millen during the Jenkins County, Georgia, riot of 1919. The county is largely rural and agricultural, with the majority of residents living in the rural part of the county. The town is home to the Millen Museum, which is a collection of historic photographs of the town and its surrounding area. It is also home to Millen's Historic District, which includes the historic Millen House, which dates back to the 18th century, and Millen Park, which was built in the early 20th century. The city is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, which runs through the center of the city. It has a population of about 2,000. The community is located in the northern part of Jenkins County and the southern part of McIntosh County, where it is mostly rural, with most of its residents living on the south side of the McIntosh River.

Geography

Millen is the only incorporated municipality in Jenkins County. It is located on the east side of the Ogeechee River. U.S. Route 25 leads north 20 miles (32 km) to Waynesboro. Georgia State Route 17 passes through the center of the city, entering from the west as Winthrope Avenue and leaving to the south as Masonic Street. According to the United States Census Bureau, Millen has a total area of 3.6 square miles (9.3 km²) of which 0.02 square miles is water. The city is located in Jenkins county, which is part of Georgia's Muscogee calfe county, and includes the towns of Statesboro, Louisville, Sylvania, Waynesborough, Savannah, and Savannah-Chattahoochee. It has a population of 2,816 (as of the 2010  Census), of whom 1,788 (or 0.67%) live in the town of Millen. The town has an estimated population of 1,817 (as of the 2010 Census). The city has a water supply of 0.2 square miles, or 0.06 km², which makes it one of the smallest cities in the state. The water supply is also the only source of drinking water for the town, which has an average of 1.3 gallons per person per day. The population of the town is 2,716 (as of the 2010  Census).

Demographics

As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 2,966 people, 1,113 households, and 563 families residing in the city. The racial makup of the city was 59.31% African American, 37.92% White, 0.17% Asian, 0,17% Pacific Islander, 1.06% Native American, and 1.03% from two or more races. Of the 1,321 households, 30.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.9% were married couples living together, 27.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.24. The median household income was $18,701 and the median family income was $23,423. The per capita income for the city is $11,851, placing Millen among the poorest locations in the state. About 30.0% of families were below the poverty line, including 45.2% of those under age 18 and 28.2%) of those age 65 or over. For every 100 females, there are 80.7 males, and for every 100. females age 18 or over there are 74.7 Males. The city has a population of 3,492, and the population density is 966.9 inhabitants per square mile (373.3/km²).

Education

The Jenkins County School District holds pre-school to grade twelve, and consists of one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school. The district has 119 full-time teachers and over 1,754 students. The school district is located in Jenkins County, North Carolina, and has a population of about 1,700. The elementary school is in the center of the district, and the middle school and high school are in the north. The high school is located near the town of Jenkins, north of North Carolina. It is the only high school in the district. It has a total of 119 teachers and more than 1,800 students. It also has a high school, which has over 100 students, and a middle school. There is also a elementary school and a high School in the school district, but no middle school or high school yet. It was founded in the early 1900s, and is the oldest school district in the state. It opened its first school in 1903. It now has three schools, one elementary and two middle schools, and two high schools. In 2007, the district added a fourth school, the Jenkins County High School, which opened in 2007. It currently has over 2,700 students. In 2008, the school system added a sixth school, Jenkins County Middle School, and an elementary school. In 2009, it added a seventh school, called Jenkins County Elementary School. In 2010, the high school was added, and in 2011, the elementary and middle school were added.
