The population was 2,678 at the 2010 census. As of the 2020 United States census, there were 2,771 people, 1,030 households, and 716 families residing in the CDP. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.03. About 8.1% of families and 9.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19. 5% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over. The median income for a household in theCDP was $46,818, and the median family income was $51,768. There were 971 housing units at an average density of 156.3 per square mile (60.4/km²).

History

Martin Gash bought 76 acres on Cripple Creek (later Gash's Creek) on November 27, 1793. Marshes which attracted buffalo had to be drained in order to use the land. The William Nelson Camp Jr. House, John A. Lanning House, Dr. Cireo McAfee McCracken House, and Sherrill's Inn are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Gash family moved to the area in the early 1800s and built a house on the site. Gash died in 1793 and was buried at the site in 1794. His son, Martin Gash III, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time in 1796 and served until 1798. He died in 1805 and was succeeded by his son, George Gash, who served from 1801 to 1805. Gashing's Creek was named after Gash and his wife, Mary, who married in 1799. The couple had a son, William, who was born in 1798 and died in 1800. The family also had a daughter, Barbara, who passed away in 1802. The house was built in 1803. The property was later sold to the Gash brothers, who lived there until the mid-19th century. It is now owned by a private company, Gash & Co., which operates a hotel and restaurant on the property. The land was once part of the site of the town of Gash. It was also known as Gash Creek.

Fairview is located in southeastern Buncombe County along U.S. Route 74A (Charlotte Highway) It is 11 miles (18 km) southeast of downtown Asheville and 16 miles (26 km) northwest of Lake Lure.According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.2 square miles (16.1 km²), all land. It has a population of 1,788. The CDP is located on U.N. Highway 74A, which runs between Asheville and Charlotte. It is on the North Carolina Turnpike, which goes from Asheville to Charlotte. The town is in the Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the cities of Asheville, Charlotte, and Asheville-Buncombe. It also includes the towns of Fairview and Lure, as well as the rural hamlet of Lure-Asheville, which is in Asheville County. It was named for the Fairview family, who lived in the area in the 1800s and early 1900s. The Fairview CDP was established in 1881. The city's population was 1,856 in 1883. It had a population growth rate of 1.7% from 1881 to 1883, and a population loss rate of 0.8% in 1894. The current population is 1,938, according to the 2010 Census. The area has an area of 6.2 square miles (16.1 km²) with a total land area of 6.3 square miles (16 square kilometers).

The town is home to the Fairview High School, which was founded in 1881. The school was the first in Fairview to offer a high school diploma. It was also the first high school to offer an associate's degree in English. The high school has one of the highest graduation rates in the state. It also has the highest crime rates.
