Barboursville is a village in Cabell County, West Virginia. It is located near the second largest city in the state, Huntington. The population was 4,258 in the 2019 census estimate. The Barboursville Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. The village is located at 38°2440N 82°1752W (38.411002, -82.297758). The confluence of the Mud River and the Guyandotte River is just north of the village. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.19 square miles (10.85 km²), of which 4.09 sq miles (10.59 km²) is land and 0.10sq miles (0.26 km²") is water. The town was platted in 1813 and is part of the HuntingtonAshland metropolitan area, which is also home to the city of Charleston. It has a population of 3,964, with 1,365 households, and 904 families living in the village as of the 2010 census. In 2000, there were 3,183 people, and 877 families living. The racial makeup of the town was 94.1% White, 3.2% African American, 1.3% Asian, and 1.2%. The Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population. The average household size was 2.12 and the average family size was2.76.

History

The Barboursville Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. The village is located at 38°2440N 82°1752W (38.411002, -82.297758) The confluence of the Mud River and the Guyandotte River is just north of the village. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.19 square miles (10.85 km²), of which 4.09 square miles is land and 0.10 sq miles (0.26 km²) is water. The Thornburg House was separately listed in 1991. The Miller House is a building constructed in 1835 by local pioneer William Clendenin Miller, grandson of Major George ClENDenin, who served under Lt. Colonel Daniel Boone in the 1774 Battle of Point Pleasant. He was the first representative of Kanawha County, and incidentally what would become Cabell County. He also was a co-founder of Charleston, West Virginia. He died in 1855, and was buried in the town's cemetery. He is survived by his wife and three children. The town has a population of about 2,000. It was platted in 1813, and is located in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle. It is one of the smallest towns in the state, with a total population of just over 3,000, according to the 2010 census. It has an estimated population of 2,200.

The average household size was 2.12, with the average family size being 2.76. The village's median age was 38.8 years. The gender makeup ofThe village's population was 52.7 per cent male and 47.3% female. The population density was 969.2 inhabitants per squaremile (374.2/km 2) The median age in thevillage was 42.4 years. For every 100 females, there are 94.4 males. For each 100 females age 18 or over, there is 90.7 males. The town's median income is $32,952, including the cost of living. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the village has a population of 3,183 people.

Business

Barboursville is home to the Huntington Mall, which is the largest indoor mall in the state of West Virginia, with more than 1.5 million square feet of retail space. Merritt's Creek Farm Shopping Center just off I-64 Exit 18 contains a Target, Home Depot, Office Depot, Petco, Marshalls, Dress Barn, Starbucks, Massage Envy, O'Charleys, Orange Theory Fitness, Bellacinos, Game Stop, and numerous other smaller tenants. In 2015, Interstate Realty, of Bristol, TN, announced plans to construct a new retail development named Tanyard Station. The development will be built on a 52-acre site that was formerly a CSX rail yard along US Route 60. It will be home to approximately 20 restaurants and retailers, including a grocery store, hotel, bank, gas station, and many others. Since its announcement, the development has been plagued by many delays and setbacks including an endangered bat species being found on the property. It was recently announced that the developer hoped to have Phase 1 of the project, which would contain approximately 16 tenants, open by the end of 2017. Another major retail development known as The Crossing has also been announced to be constructed just off the Big Ben Bowen Highway (WV Route 193) It has been described as "upscale retail, restaurants, and lodging" The development is slated to be one of the largest retail developments ever built in Cabell County with over 400,000 square feet.

University courses are available through Marshall University and Mountwest Community and Technical College in Huntington, West Virginia.

Landmarks

Barboursville is located near U.S. Route 60, which follows the route of the historic Midland Trail. Other landmarks include the Veterans' Home, Barboursville Elementary and Middle Schools (both schools have been rebuilt), and Barboursvile Park, which serves as a popular recreation area for residents of the area. Lake William is a 17-acre impoundment located on the City Barbouringville's Community Park in Cabell County. It is accessible by County Route 31 and 31, which lead to the village's community park. There is also a newly opened splash pad and plans have been announced to build a disc golf course in the park. The U.S. Youth Soccer Region 1 Championship was held at the soccer complex in 2015 and 2016. Also hosted was the U.N. Youth soccer Region 1 President's Cup in 2017. The village is home to a number of historic buildings, including an old toll house dating to the pre-Civil War era, and a Veterans' home, which was built in the early 1900s. The Village is also home to several historic structures, including a toll house, and an old elementary school, which has been rebuilt. The town is also known for its love of horses, with a horse show ring and equestrian trails in the village.
