Raphine is an unincorporated community in Rockbridge County in the Shenandoah Valley in the U.S. state of Virginia. The name was chosen in honor of James Edward Allen Gibbs (1829-1902), a local farmer who patented a novel single-thread chain-stitch sewing machine on June 2, 1857. Gibbs had named his home in the area, as well as the new railroad station, after the ancient Greek "rhaphis", meaning "needle"Nearby, the McCormick family farm, Walnut Grove, was the home of Cyrus McCormick (1809-1884) who became famous as the inventor of the mechanical reaper in 1831. The McCormick farm became a test farm for Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (better known as "Virginia Tech"). The Kennedy-Lunsford Farm and Kennedy-Wade Mill are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Rockbridge Advocate (monthly magazine) and the News-Gazette (weekly newspaper) are the community's two local newspapers. The community is home to the Virginia Tech Alumni Association, which was founded in 1883 and is now part of the International Harvester Corporation (IHC) It is also home to Virginia State University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, which is part of IHC. The town has a population of about 2,000 people (as of the 2010 census). The town is located in the southern part of Rockbridge county.

History

The name "Raphine" was chosen in honor of James Edward Allen Gibbs (1829-1902), a local farmer who patented a novel single-thread chain-stitch sewing machine on June 2, 1857. Gibbs had named his home in the area, as well as the new railroad station, after the ancient Greek "rhaphis", meaning "needle" Nearby, the McCormick family farm, Walnut Grove, was the home of Cyrus McCormick (1809-1884), who became famous as the inventor of the mechanical reaper in 1831. The McCormick farm became a test farm for Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (better known as "Virginia Tech"). The Kennedy-Lunsford Farm and Kennedy-Wade Mill are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1847, McCormick moved to Chicago, Illinois, and was the founder, with his brother Leander, of the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company which became part of International Harvester Corporation in 1902. Willcox & Gibbs commercial sewing machines are still made and used in the 21st century. The name of the town of Raphine, Virginia, is still used to refer to a town in South Carolina, which was once part of the Carolinas, and is now part of South Carolina. The town has a population of about 3,000. It is located in the Shenandoah Valley, which is one of the most populous counties in the state.
