It lies at an elevation of 89 feet (27 m) and is located in Southampton County. It is located on the Virginia Turnpike, which runs through the center of the CDP. It has a population of 470, according to the 2010 U.S. Census. The CDP is part of the Southampton County area, which is in the eastern part of Virginia. It was named after the town of Sedley, in the state's eastern part, where it lies on the turnpike. The name Sedley is derived from the English word "sedge" which means "edge" or "hill" and refers to the area's rocky topography.
