Glen Allen is a census-designated place (CDP) in Henrico County, Virginia, United States. The population was 16,187 as of the 2020 Census, up from 14,774 at the 2010 census. The area of Glen Allen used to be mostly rural farmland, but it is now a growing suburb of Richmond. Glen Allen uses two postal addresses, ZIP codes 23059 and 23060, which cover neighboring communities as well, including rural areas of Hanover County to the north. The Glen Allen CDP includes all or portions of the communities of Hunton, Greenwood, Longdale, Holly Glen Estates, Biltmore, and Yellow Tavern. The U.S. Census Bureau says the CDP has a total area of 8.86 square miles (22.94 km²) of which 8.79 square miles of land and 0.069 sq miles (0.18 km²), or 0.76%, are water. The most noted resident was Captain John Cussons, a native Englishman, Confederate scout, author, and entrepreneur. He built a fashionable resort hotel known as Forest Lodge adjacent to the railroad tracks. The CDP is bordered by the Chickahominy River, which forms theHenricoHanover County line. The eastern border of the C DP is Interstate 95, from the ChickAHOMiny River south to East Parham Road. The southern border ofthe CDP follows the CSX railroad line, which it follows south to Hungary Road.

History

Glen Allen took its name from the homestead of a local landowner, Mrs. Benjamin Allen. Captain John Cussons, a native Englishman, Confederate scout, author, and entrepreneur, made his residence here after the Civil War. Later he built a fashionable resort hotel known as Forest Lodge adjacent to the railroad tracks. The area of Glen Allen used to be mostly rural farmland, but it is now a growing suburb of Richmond. It is home to the Virginia Museum of Natural History, which was founded in 1851. The museum is located on the banks of the Rappahannock River, which runs through the center of the town. It was the site of the first recorded European contact with the U.S. in the 17th century. The Virginia National Guard was stationed in the area from 1835 to 1836. The U.N. has a museum in the town of Richmond, Virginia, which opened in 1858. The National Museum ofNatural History is located in the city's downtown area, and the Virginia State Museum is in the nearby town of Virginia Beach. It opened in 1861. The city's history dates back to the early 19th century, when it was known as "Mountain Road Crossing" when rail service began. The name Glen Allen was first used in 1836, when the railroad was first built. The town was named after Mrs. Allen, who lived on a homestead on the site. It became known as Glen Allen when the rail line was completed in 1838.

The western border is the CSX railroad line, which it follows south to Hungary Road. The border follows the railroad north to County Road 625 (Greenwood Road), then takes Old Washington Highway to the Chickahsominy river. The southern border is U.S. Route 1, Virginia State Route 157 (Mountain Road), Jessie Chavis Drive, North Run, Woodman Road, Blackburn Road, Winston Boulevard, and Indale Road. It then follows a power line northeast back to the CSx rail line. It follows the rail line north to the railroad, then to Old Washington highway.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 12,562 people, 5,131 households, and 3,504 families residing in the CDP. There were 5,297 housing units at an average density of 598.8/sq mi (231.1/km²) The racial makeup of the C DP was 74.9% White, 19.5% African American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, and 1.8% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population. The median income for a household was $55,205, and the median family income was $63,670. The per capita income for the CPD was $25,719. About 1.0% of families and 2.5%. of the residents were below the poverty line, including 2.8%. of those under age 18 and 1,6% of those age 65 or over. A selection in Money Magazine's 2007 "Top 100 Places to Live" and 2009 " top 100 places to live" in the U.S. to live in New York City. The city is located on the New York-Long Island Rail Road, which connects to the East Coast via the New Jersey Turnpike and the Staten Island Railway. Appliance maker Hamilton Beach and insurer Markel are based in Glen Allen. The two companies have been in business together for more than 30 years.
