Remington is a small incorporated town in Fauquier County, Virginia, United States. The population was 598 at the 2010 census. The Remington Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. The town was among the last municipalities still using a Confederate battle flag in its official seal. The council voted to remove the Confederate flag from its seal on July 20, 2020. Remington is located at 38°328N 77°4829W (38.535464, 77.808117). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.6 km²), all of it land. U.S. Route 15 and U.S. Route 29 are the main roadways to the Remington area. Additional local roads provide access to adjacent unincorporated portions of Fauqier County and Culpeper County. The city is located on the Rappahannock River, which was the site of two Civil War battles. The Battle of Brandy Station was fought just across the Rappahsnock River from the town of Remington. It was a commercial port during the mid-nineteenth century, but the canal failed financially and operations were abandoned. Later, it was a stop on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad. The O&A was eventually absorbed into the Norfolk Southern system, and theremington spur fell into disuse. It is near the highways, U.N. Route 17, US Route 29, and Virginia State Route 28.
History
Remington was a commercial port during the mid-nineteenth century. It was a stop on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad called Rappahannock Station. The town was among the last municipalities still using a Confederate battle flag in its official seal. The Remington town council voted to remove the Confederate flag from its seal on July 20, 2020. Remington Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. It is one of the last towns in Virginia to still use a Confederate flag on its police uniform shoulder patches. The Battle of Brandy Station was fought in the town during the American Civil War. Colonel John S. Mosby made his home and practiced law in nearby Warrenton, Virginia, during the war. The town is located on the RappahANNock River, which is a tributary of the Potomac River. It has a population of about 1,000, and is located in the northern part of the Shenandoah Valley, near the border with Frederick County, Virginia. The city is home to the Virginia Military Institute, which was founded in 1859. It also has the Virginia State Museum, which dates back to the 17th century. In the early 20th century, the town was the site of the First Battle of Rappahannonock Station and the Second Battle of the same name, both fought during the Civil War, just across the river from Brandy station. The U.S. Army used the town as a base during the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.
