Burgess is an unincorporated community in Northumberland County, in the U.S. state of Virginia.Versailles was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. It is located on the Virginia Turnpike, which runs through the town. The town was named after Burgess, a former member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, who was killed in a car accident in the early 1900s. It has a post office with the ZIP code of 7054. It was named for Burgess, the son of a former Virginia House member, who died in the late 1800s. The community is also known as Versailles, after the town's French-American namesake. It also has a Dutch-American name, which means "beautiful place" or "pleasant place" and was once known as "Verailles" The town's name is derived from the French word for "beauty" and "burgess", which is the name of a village in the same county, "Vermont". It is also called "Burges" for the same reason, because it is located near the town of Burgess, which was once part of the Province of Vermont.
