Toughkenamon is a census-designated place (CDP) in New Garden Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,492 at the 2010 census. The area known as Toughkenamon was originally inhabited by Lenape Native Americans who spoke Unami. It was an early industrial center due to its strategic location on the old Baltimore Pike between Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. The Philadelphia & Baltimore Central Railroad (now East Penn Railroad) parallels Baltimore Pike, originally crossing the Pennsylvania Rail Road in Avondale. The CDP has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²), of which 0.48% is water. At the 2020 census there were 1,479 people in 393 households, including 301 families, in the CDP. The average household size was 3.21. The median income for a CDP was $38,500 for males and $18,000 for females. There were 393 housing units at an average density of 187.9/sq mi (71.8/km²). The racial makeup of the C DP was 73.55% White, 2.62% African American, 0.10% Native American,0.83% Asian, 20.56% from other races, and 2.31% from two or more races. The Hispanic or Latino of any race were 48.56%. The fact that the original Tough Kenamon settlers maintained water-filled trenches is evidence that they had dialogue and an understanding of the importance of the burn. The traditional burn was an ancient way to increase yields.

History

The area known as Toughkenamon was originally inhabited by Lenape Native Americans who spoke Unami. The characteristics of the interactions between settlers and Lenapes was a microcosm of the conflicts that would occur in the future. It was an early industrial center due to its strategic location on the old Baltimore Pike between Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., easy access to raw materials such as wood, water and ore. Even today, businesses critical to national wholesale distribution of perishable foods are located in and near the village of Tough Kenamon. The town is located in New Garden Township, Delaware County, and was once part of Chester County, Pennsylvania. It is located on Dochcanamon Hill, a hill that has been quarried for centuries. The village was once known as Tokenamon, Taukenamon, Taughlikenemon, or Toughkenamon. It has a population of about 2,000. The city's name is derived from the word Tough, which means "tough" or "marsh" in the Lenape language, which is a form of "unami" (pronounced "un-ami"). The town's name was first used in 1706 by Thomas and Mary Rowland, who were perhaps the first settlers who purchased lands in the township. The township is now part of Delaware County and is home to the town of New Garden, a town of about 1,000 people, and the city of Delaware, a city of about 3,500.

The town has a population of 1,816. The CDP is located in the eastern part of the state. The city's population is 1,788. It has a latitude of 39.4°N, and a longitude of 75.5°W. It is the only town in the state to have a population over 1,000. The population of Toughkenamon was 1,081 at the 2010 census. The area has a water content of 0.4% (0.2% of the city's surface) and a dryness of 1.3% (1.7% of its surface) of the town's surface. It also has an altitude of 39°N and 75°W, and has a land mass of 5.4 square miles (11.2 km²) and 0.8 square miles (5 km3) The town's elevation is 39°S, 75°E, and its water content is 0.6 sq m (1 meter) and 1.7 sq miles (2.0 mi).

Transportation

Toughkenamon is located east of Pennsylvania Route 41 in Avondale on the old Baltimore Pike, a few miles west-southwest of Kennett Square. The Philadelphia & Baltimore Central Railroad (now East Penn Railroad) parallels Baltimore Pike. Interstate 95, U.S. 1, Pennsylvania 41, and U.S. 30 are used as approaches to Toughkenamon. New Garden Airport is northeast on Tough Kenamon Hill. East Penn railroad now connects Toughkenamon to the national freight network at Chadd's Ford. The town is located on the former Baltimore & Philadelphia Central Railroad line, originally crossing the Pennsylvania Rail Road in Avondsale. It is located in the Philadelphia suburbs, near the city of Philadelphia and the suburbs of Baltimore and Baltimore Heights, and near the town of Baltimore Heights. The city of Baltimore is the site of the city's largest public housing development, the City of Baltimore Center, which opened in the 1950s and 1960s. It has a population of about 3,000. The area is known for its scenic beauty and natural scenery, including Toughkenaman Hill, a small hill that overlooks the city. It also has a number of historic buildings, including the Baltimore and Philadelphia Railroad Station, which was built in the early 20th century, and the former Philadelphia and Baltimore Central Railway station, which is now part of the East Penn Rail Road. It was built to connect the city to the rest of the country. The old Baltimore & Baltimore Railroad line is now a part of East Penn.

The racial makeup of the C DP was 73.55% White, 2.62% African American, 0.10% Native American,0.83% Asian, 20.56% from other races, and 2.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 48.56%. The population distribution was 26.1% under the age of 18, 14.2% from 18 to 24, 35.8% from 25 to 44, 14,3% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% 65 or older. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 128.5 males. The population density was 664.8 people per square mile (255.5/km²). There were 393 housing units at an average density of 187.9/sq mi (71.8/ km²) The median age was 32 years. The CDP is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which runs from New Jersey to New Jersey. The Turnpix is on the U.S. Route 1 corridor.
