Levittown is a census-designated place (CDP) and planned community in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The population was 52,983 at the 2010 census. Though not a municipality, it is sometimes recognized as the largest suburb of Philadelphia. Construction of Levittown began in 1952 and when completed in 1958, 17,311 homes were built. William J. Levitt, who is often credited as the creator of the modern American suburb, designed the first Levitt home in Long Island, New York. The Levitts would not sell homes to African Americans. Daisy Myers has been hailed as "The Rosa Parks of the North", who helped expose the problems of racial inequality in the U.S. in the 1950s and '60s. The first Black couple, Bea and Lew Wechler, were harassed by a mob when they tried to sell their home to an African-American family. This led to an injunction and criminal charges against the Myerses and their supporters, but the couple refused to surrender and received national acclaim for their efforts. The couple later wrote a book about their experiences, which led to a criminal injunction against their supporters and led to their release from prison. The brothers William Levitt and architect Alfred Levitt designed its six typical houses. The homes were moderately priced and required only a low down payment, with only modest exterior variations within each model. The houses were built on a 26-step rationalized building method that was essentially an assembly line type of home building.

History

Levittown is the primary city name, but also Fallsington are acceptable city names or spellings. Levittown, Pennsylvania was the second "Levitttown" built by William J. Levitt, who is often credited as the creator of the modern American suburb. Construction of Levittown began in 1952 and when completed in 1958, 17,311 homes were built. Residents were expected to comply with a lengthy list of rules and regulations regarding the upkeep of their homes. The community's otherwise placid exterior was again disturbed during the June 23, 1979, riots in the wake of the Camp David Peace Accords, which resulted in a second Arab-producing oil embargo. The first Black couple, William and Daisy Myers, bought a home in the Dogwood Hollow section in 1957. Daisy Myers has been hailed as "The Rosa Parks of the North", who helped expose the northern states' problems with racial inequality of that time. In the years since Levitt & Sons ended construction, three- and four-story "garden apartments" and a number of non-Levitt owner-occupied houses have been built in Levitttown. The most recent of these was built in 2009. The current Levittowners live in Willboro Township, New Jersey, near the New Jersey-New York border. The Levitts still refused to sell their next-to-last home to blacks, and plans for yet another whites-only Levittwhile, N.J., were fighting legal challenges in the U.S. Supreme Court. The ACLU, NAACP and the Federal Housing Administration threatened to refuse mortgages to Levitt.

Municipalities and sections

Levittown is not an incorporated place, though efforts in the early 1950s were made to incorporate. Some Levittown residents feared that incorporation would lead to higher taxes, by robbing the prospective municipality of a commercial tax base. The shopping center began a slow decline in the mid-1970s from which it never recovered with the building of the Oxford Valley Mall. The names of the streets within each section uniformly begin with the same letter that begins the name of the section in question except for the section of Green Lynne, which was not constructed by Bill Levitt. "X" and "Z" are not used for section or street names. As there are more than 24 section names, "road" is used for street names in sections to the west of Edgely Road, 'lane' is used in those section to the east. Some sections have their drive broken into multiple parts, with similar names. Almost all other roads or lanes in the sections connect on one or both ends to the drive of that section. In some sections, such as Goldenridge, the shape of the. section prevents the drive from surrounding the section, or allowing all roads in the section from connecting to the. drive. The name of a section is often a reference to its location or the location of their nearby location. Some examples: Learning Lane connects Pinewood and Walt Disney Elementary School, Short Lane connects Stoneybrook and Farmbrook, and Snowball Gate and Forsythia Gate are collectively known as "The Gates".

Education

Middletown residents are served by public schools run by the Neshaminy School District. Bristol Township public schools are managed by the Bristol Township School district. Falls Township and Tullytown Borough residents are serving by the Pennsbury School District, in and around Levittown. Some students attend schoolsrun by Roman Catholic, Lutheran, evangelical Protestant and Quaker organizations, in the Levitttown area of the town. The town is also home to a number of non-profit organizations, such as the New Jersey Council on the Arts and Humanities, which provides free speech and other services to the residents of the towns and villages of Bristol Township, Falls Township, and Tulltown Borough. The New Jersey Department of Education provides free and reduced-price school lunches to residents in Bristol Township and Falls Township. The district also provides free health care to residents of Tully Town Borough and the town of MiddletOWN. The school district provides free haircuts and massages for residents in the town and the borough of Bristol, as well as free medical care for those in the towns of Bristol and Middlettown. The township also offers a free library, with a collection of books and other resources available to residents. It is the only school district in the borough. The borough also has a public library, which is open to the public. It was established in the early 1900s and is run by a group of parents and teachers called the Friends of the Franklin Township Library.

Geography

Levittown is located at 40°915N 74°5059W. It is in Bucks County, between Philadelphia and Trenton, New Jersey. Downtown Philadelphia is approximately 22 miles (35 km) away. It has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa) bordering a hot-summer humid continental climate (Dfa) Average monthly temperatures in the central CDP range from 32.2°F in January to 76.1 °F in July. The local hardiness zone is 7a. Levittown has a total area of 10.2 square miles (26 km²), of which 0.5 km² (0.59%) is water. The CDP is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area (an area also known generally as the Delaware Valley). It is adjacent to and nearly surrounds Fairless Hills, a suburban community more modest in scale, but that shares many of Levitttown's characteristics. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the CDP has a population of 2,788. The area has a climate of Cfa, with an average monthly temperature of 32°F (10°C) in January and 76 °F (15°C in July) The localHardiness Zone 7a is in the town's central area, meaning it has a hardiness rating of 7a-7a. The average annual rainfall is 1.6 inches (38.5 mm) and the average annual temperature is 2.2 inches (51.4 °F).

Transportation

SEPTA Regional Rail serves Levittown to the south and north. Interstate 295 (I-295) runs to the north and west, connecting it with the suburbs north of Trenton. The nearest international airport is Philadelphia International Airport (Airport Code PHL), approximately 34 miles (55 km) southwest of Levitttown. The closest Amtrak station is just across the Delaware River in Trenton at the Trenton Transit Center, just over 9 miles (14 km) to the east. Many Levittowners have historically commuted by automobile or train to Philadelphia, some to Trenton, still others to more distant locales in as many as four states. Just over ten percent of employed Levittowner both live and work in the community. The town has a population of about 2,000 people, with the majority of residents living in the Falls Township section of Falls Township, which is located on the eastern edge of the town. The township was once home to a U.S. Steel mill, but the mill closed in the 1980s and the community has since been largely abandoned. The community is now home to about 1,200 people. It is located in the Philadelphia Metropolitan Statistical Area, which covers the western suburbs of Philadelphia, the eastern suburbs of New Jersey, and the northern New Jersey portion of the New Jersey Turnpike. It also includes parts of the suburbs of Camden, Trenton and Trenton-on-Hudson, as well as parts of New York and New Jersey.

As of the 2010 census, Levittown was 87.7% White, 5.1% Hispanic or Latino ancestry of any race, 3.6% Black or African American, 1.7%. 1.6%. were two or more races, 0.3% were some other race and 0.2% Native American. As of the census of 2000, there were 53,966 people, 18,603 households, and 14,510 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 5,309.5 people per square mile (2,050.8/km²). There were 19,044 housing units at an average density of 1,873.7/mi2 (723.7 /km²) The median income for a household in theCDP was $52,514, and $57,220 for a family. The per capita income was $20,047. About 3.1%. of families and 4. 6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.6. of those under the age of 18 and 3.5% of those 65 and older. The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 3.28. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there are 96.3 males. For each 100 females age 18 and over, there there are 92.6 males. At least 13.4% of residents ages 25 or older had at least a high school diploma, while 13. 4% had a bachelor's degree.
