Pine Grove is a borough in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, United States. As of the 2020 census, the borough population was 2,054. A 22-mile (35 km) feeder branch of the Union Canal connected the Swatara Creek at Pine Grove to Union Water Works between 1830 (or 1832) and 1862. The branch canal was used to ship anthracite and supply water to the Water Works. The historic, existing home Nutting Hall was built between 1823 and 1825. The 335-seat Pine Grove Theatre, which is also part of the Pine Grove Historic District, opened in 1910 and is still up and running {2021}. The borough was officially incorporated in 1830 or 1832, although European settlement of the areaparticularly by German Palatinespredates this official foundation date by at least a few decades. Parts of Swatsara State Park are located along the Swatsar Creeka tributary of the Susquehanna River. The borough is home to the Pinegrove Historical Society and the Pinegrove Township Historical Society. The town is also the home of the American soccer player David Horst and author Richard "Dick" Wheeler (1922-2008), author and historian of The Great Gatsby, and the author of The Secret History of the U.S. Civil War, among other things. The city is located on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which runs through the town.
History
Pine Grove was officially incorporated in 1830 or 1832. The historic, existing home Nutting Hall was built between 1823 and 1825. The 335-seat Pine Grove Theatre, which is also part of the Pine Grove Historic District, opened in 1910 and is still up and running {2021}. Pine Grove is home to the National Register of Historic Places-listed Nutting Hall and the surrounding pine grove Historic District. Pine Grove was founded by German Palatines in the 17th century. The town is located on the banks of the Little Pine River, which flows through the center of the town. The Pine Grove River was once a tributary of the Ohio River, and was used as a route for the Ohio Turnpike in the 1800s and early 1900s. It is now a popular tourist destination, especially in the spring and summer, when the river is at its busiest. The area is also home to a number of historic buildings, including the National Museum of American History, which was built in 1825 and is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and National Reservations and is in the National Historical District of the United States. The Pine Grove Historic District, which includes the Nutting Hall, is also listed on the National Register of historic places and was founded in 1823. The National Reservation of Historic Places also includes the Pine Grove Theater, which opened in 1910.
Geography
Swatara Creeka tributary of the Susquehanna River runs through Pine Grove. A 22-mile (35 km) feeder branch of the Union Canal connected the Swatara Creek at Pine Grove to Union Water Works between 1830 (or 1832) and 1862, until its destruction in 1862. The branch canal was used to ship anthracite and supply water to the Water Works. Parts of Swatsara State Park are located along the SwAtara Creek within Pine Grove, along with parts of the Swatsaras Creek Golf Course and the Swatters Creek Golf course. The Swatsars Creek Golf Club is located on the banks of the creek, and the golf course was built in the early 1900s. The golf course is one of the oldest in the United States, dating back to the 18th century. It was built on the site of a 17th-century golf course, which was later converted into a state park. It is located at the base of a hill known as the "Swatsars Run", which runs through the center of the town. The creek is also known as "The Swataras River" because of the name of its tributaries, the "swatara" and the "creeka" in the nearby "Swatters" river. The "swatsars" are believed to have been named after the swatsars, a group of Native Americans who lived in the area in the late 1800s and early 1800s.
