Middleburg is a borough in Snyder County, located in Central Pennsylvania's Susquehanna River Valley. The population was 1,325 at the 2020 census. A portion of the site that Middleburg occupies was the location of the Stump's Run Massacre in January 1768. Middleburg is also home to the main processing plant of Ira Middleswarth and Son, Inc., the manufacturer of Middles warth Potato Chips. The town was originally named Swinefordstown (Swinefordstettle in the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect) after John Albrightswineford who ran a tavern here in 1787. It is part of the Selinsgrove, PA Micropolitan Statistical Area, and is also part of larger Bloomsburg-Berwick-Sunbury, PA Combined Statistical Area. A major employer in the town following the Second World War was the Middleburg Tannery. It employed nearly sixty men and women that tanned high grade sole leather. Most of the raw material used at the plant came from South America, and many of the finished products were used in the manufacture of Florsheim Shoes. History

Middleburg was originally named Swinefordstown (Swinefordstettle in the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect) It was incorporated as a borough in 1864. A portion of the site that Middleburg occupies was the location of the Stump's Run Massacre in January 1768. A major employer in the town following the Second World War was the Middleburg Tannery. It employed nearly sixty men and women that tanned high grade sole leather. Most of the raw material used at the plant came from South America, and many of the finished products were used in the manufacture of Florsheim Shoes. The tannery complex was leveled by a devastating fire in June 1967 and it was never rebuilt. Middleburg is also home to the main processing plant of Ira Middleswarth and Son, Inc., the manufacturer of Middles warth Potato Chips. It is located near the Snyder County Historical Society and the Glendale Cemetery. The town was founded in 1800 by engineer Frederick Evans, who laid out the town on the north bank of the Middle Creek. The southern section of the town was first known as Franklin, and later, Swine Ford. The SwineFord name is still used by the Swinefords National Bank, founded in 1903, which is listed as a part of the Fulton Financial Family in 2013. It was annexed by the Middleburgh borough in 1917. The borough and the town were united under one government in 1917, but two separate and distinct post offices operated in the borough until March 1955.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km²), all land. The borough is located in New Jersey's Hudson River Valley. It is the only borough in the state of New Jersey that is not part of the city of Trenton. The town has a population of 1,000, according to the United States Census Bureau. The population of the borough as of the 2010 Census was 1,071. The city's population is 1,081. It has a land area of 0.9 square miles (2 km²) and a population density of 1,074.7 per square mile (1,084.3 per km²) The borough has an area of 0.8 square miles (1.7 sq mi) and an area of 0.6 square kilometers (0.7 sq m or 1.3 sq miles) with an elevation of 1.0 meter (3.2 in) to 1.7 meters (4.4 in), all of which is land. It also has a water supply of about 1.5 meters (3 ft) by 1.6 meters (2 1/2 inch) and 1.2 inches (4 cm) by 2.4 inches (6 in). The borough's water supply is supplied by the New Jersey Department of Health and Human Services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,382 people, 611 households, and 378 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,557.3 people per square mile (599.5/km²) The racial makeup of the borough was 98.55% White, 0.43% African American,0.29% Asian, 0,22% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.36% of the population. The median income for a household in the Borough was $30,766, and $36,944 for a family. The per capita income for the borough is $16,660. About 9.2% of families and 10.8% of people were below the poverty line, including 15.6% of those under age 18 and 9.3% ofThose age 65 or over. The borough is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which connects to New Jersey and New Jersey via the Raritan River and the Susquehannock River. It is the only borough in the state to have a post office, which opened in 1881. The post office is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. It was closed in the 1990s and reopened in the mid-2000s. The town's name is derived from the name of a former post office in the town, which was shut down in the late 1800s.
