Alexander is a town in Genesee County, New York, United States. The population was 2,534 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Alexander Rea, an early settler, and is on the southern border of the county. It includes the Alexander Classical School, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.5 square miles (92.0 km²), of which 35.4 square miles is land and 0.04 square mile (0.1 km², or 0.08%) is water. Tonawanda Creek, a tributary of the Niagara River, flows northward through the town. A hamlet in the northeast corner of the town is called Alexander Village at the corner of Bethany Road and the town line with Bethany. The southern town line is the border of Wyoming County, and Alexander Village is at the border with Attica, a hamlet near the east town line. The village of Alexander is in the south central part of the Town of Attica. It is located at the intersection of Walnut Street and Route 98, north of the village of Attia. It has a population of 2,451, with 860 households, and 651 families as of the census of 2000. The median income for a household in the town was $43,500, and the median age for a family was $51,364. History

The town of Alexander was incorporated in 1812 from a part of Batavia. The town includes the Alexander Classical School, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The school was founded by Alexander Rea in 1802. It is located on the corner of Walnut Street and Route 98, north of the town's central business district. It was built on the site of what is now known as the Alexander House, which was built in 1803. The Alexander House is now part of the National Museum of American History, which is located in New York City. The museum is open to the public and has a collection of more than 1,000 pieces of art, many of which are on display in the town hall and its surrounding area. The city's main square is called the Alexander Building, and it was built by Alexander in 1801. It has a diameter of 8.5 feet (2.5 meters) and a height of 6 feet (1.5 metres) The town's name comes from the Alexander family, who founded the town in the 17th century.
