Frankfort is a town in Herkimer County, New York, United States. The town is named after one of its earliest settlers, Lawrence (Lewis) Frank. Frankfort is located east of Utica, and the Erie Canal passes along its northern border. The first European settlers in this area were German Palatines who came to the colony as religious refugees in 1723. At the time of the 2010 census, the town's population was 7,636. The Balloon Farm in Frankfort was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. Many Italian American families in the town and village are descendants of immigrants from Oriza, or Calabria, Italy and from Sanuseppe Iato, Sicily. It was previously called "McGowans" It borders the town of Frankfort and the village of Ilionville, which was previously known as "Frankfort" and "Ilionville" It is located on New York State Route 5S, which runs parallel to the Mohawk River. The western border of the town is the Oneida County line. The northern border is the Mohawks River. Moyer Creek and Ferguson Creek flow northward through Frankfort to theMohawk River, which flows northward to the Hudson River. It is also on the New York-Ontario border, where the New England Aquarium is located. It has an area of 36.5 square miles (94.6 km²), of which 36.4 square miles of land and 0.3 km², or 0.29%, are water.

History

Frankfort is the primary city name, but also Schuyler are acceptable city names or spellings, Frankfort Center, North Ilion on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The first European settlers in this area were German Palatines who came to the colony as religious refugees in 1723. During the French and Indian War, this area suffered fierce attacks by the French with their Indian allies. The area of the early town was resettled before 1794, by the granting of land patents. In 1798, the northwest part of Frankfort was taken away to form part of the town of Deerfield. The Balloon Farm in Frankfort has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. The town was established after the Revolutionary War from part of German Flatts. It is located on the banks of the Little Rappahannock River, which was once known as the Rappahanni River. It was the site of the first European settlement in the area, and is now known as one of the oldest towns in the United States. The city was named after the Frankfort, Germany, where the town was founded in 17th century. It has a population of about 2,000 people, with the majority of the population living in the northwest. The Frankfort area was first settled by the Palatine settlers, who came from Germany in the 1723, and moved to the area during the French & Indian War. The current town was formed after the American Revolutionary War, when the French lost control of the area to the Indian allies of the U.S., and the French were forced to retreat. The western border of the town is the Oneida County line, and the northern border is the Mohawk River. Moyer Creek and Ferguson Creek flow northward through Frankfort to the Mohawks River. New York State Route 5S runs parallel to theMohawk River in the village of Frankfort. State Route 171 intersects old NY 5S in the town's village ofFrankfort. The town is part of the Town of Oneida, which is in Westchester County, New York. It is located in the northern part of Oneidas County, near the border with Oneida and Oneida Counties, and south of the border to the town of Mohawk, in Ulster County. It has a population of 2,816. It was founded in the early 1800s and was named after the Frankfort, New Hampshire, town of the same name, which was once the site of the first post office in the United States. Frankfort is located at the junction of two rivers: Moyer and Ferguson, which flows northward to the River Mohawk. The Mohawk is a tributary of the Hudson River, which runs through the town to the East River. It also flows north to the West River, where it meets the East river.

Demographics

As of the 2000 census, there were 7,478 people, 2,997 households, and 2,091 families residing in Frankfort. Frankfort has a large Italian American population. Many Italian American families in the town and village are descendants of immigrants from Oriolo, Cosenza, or Calabria, Italy and from San Giuseppe Iato, Sicily. The first settler of Oriolo may have been Giuseppi Franchino, who appeared in the 1880 census as Joseph Frank, age 33, birthplace Italy. The town has a population of 23.7% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 27. 7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 or older. The median income for a household in the city was $38,399, and $43,594 for a family. The per capita income for the town was $16,719. About 7.5% of families and 9.2%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.3%. of those under age 18 and 10.3. of those age 65 or over. The city's population was 23. 7%. The town's population density was 200.9 people per square mile (77.6/km²). There were 3,185 housing units at an average density of 85.6 per squaremile (33.0/km 2).

Communities and locations in the town of Frankfort

The town of Frankfort is located in central New York. The town is made up of a number of hamlets and villages. The Frankfort Hill District No. 10 School was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. Frankfort Gorge is a valley containing Moyer Creek that extends from the southern town line up to Frankfort village. It is located on the NY-5S at the Mohawk River in the northeastern part of the town. It was previously called "McGowansville" before being renamed "Frankfort Center" and "Howards Bush" in the early 1900s. The Remington House was added to the National register of historic places in 1997. It's located on County Road 104 in the western part of Frank Fort. It has been called "Maggie's Bush" since the 1950s. It also has been known as "Howard Bush" before it was renamed "HowARD Bush" and then "Howarden Bush" It is now called "West Frankfort" and is located near the western town line. It borders the village of Ilion on the east side of the Mohawks River. It once was called "Four Mile Grocery" because it was located near a four-mile-long grocery store. It now has a population of about 1,200. It lies on the New York State Route 5S, which is the main highway through Frankfort. There is also an elevation of about 2,000 feet in the northern part of town.

Herkimer County Fair

The Herkimer County Fair is a six-day fair held annually in Frankfort, New York. The fair was started in 1841, and moved from village to village. It moved to a permanent site on Cemetery Hill in 1958, after buying the Slocum Farm. It currently sits on 26 acres (11 ha), and has 10 permanent buildings as well a permanent bathroom, shower facilities, a horse corral, and aluminum bleacher seating surrounding the event show ring. It is the only county fair in New York that is not open to the public, and is open only to residents of the town of Frankfort and its surrounding areas. It has been open since 1841 and is the oldest county fair still in existence in the United States. It was first held in the early 1900s, at a site which later became the Hekimer Thruway interchange. At that time, the fair had a racetrack and grandstand which were later destroyed by a fire. It became an annual event in 1950, after moving to Frankfort in 1950. In 1958, it moved to its current site, which is located on cemetery Hill, on a 26-acre (11ha) plot of land. It began as a county fair, and has since become an annual fair. It also has a horse show, which has been held every year since the 1970s. It now has a grandstand and a horse barn, as well as other facilities such as a bathroom and shower facilities.
