Earlville is a village in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 872 at the 2010 census. The Madison County part of Earlville is part of the Syracuse Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area was first settled around 1792 and was originally called "Forks" or "Madison Forks" until the current name was adopted around 1835. It was named for the builder of the Chenango Canal. Earlville became an incorporated village in 1887. The Earlville Opera House was listed in 1973 and houses a theater, two art galleries, an arts cafe, and an artisan gift shop. The village is known for its lovely historical Victorian homes and Second Empire roofs. It is located at 42°4428N 75°3238W (42.741079, -75.543827) according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.1 square miles (2.8 km²), all land. New York State Route 12B, a northsouth highway, passes through the center of the village as North and South Main Street. East and West Main Street crosses NY 12B, dividing the village between two counties (Madison and Chenango). The Chenango River is a southward-flowing tributary of the Susquehanna River. The town of Hamilton is in Madison County and is in the towns of Sherburne and Hamilton. The eastwest thoroughfare, Main Street, runs along the county line.

History

Earlville is the primary city name, but also Lebanon, Poolville are acceptable city names or spellings, Lebanon Center, South Hamilton, South Lebanon on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The village is located on the U.S. Route 20 corridor. It is located near the junction of U.N. Route 17 and U. S. Route 50. The U. N. Route 19 corridor runs through the center of the town. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in World War I. The town was once known as "The Bulge" because of the large number of German soldiers stationed there. It has been known as the "Bulge" since the early 1900s, when it was the only town in the area to have a German-speaking population. The name is now used to refer to the town's German-American residents.
