Riverhead is a town in Suffolk County, New York, on the north shore of Long Island. The town rests on the mouth of the Peconic River, from which it derives its name. The smaller hamlet of Riverhead lies within it, and is the town's principal economic center. Since 1727, Riverhead has been the county seat of Suffolk County. As of the 2020 census, the population was 35,902. Riverhead is 166 miles (267 km) southwest of Boston via the Orient Point-New London Ferry. It is 76 miles (123 km) northeast of New York City. The northern town line is delineated by Long Island Sound, with Connecticut on the opposite shore. The eastern terminus of the Long Island Expressway is in Riverhead. Long Island has one of the northernmost humid subtropical climates (Köppen Cfa) in the United States. It has the highest homicide rate in the U.S. among towns with more than 1,000 people per square mile (1,000 km²) of land. It also has the lowest murder rate of any town on Long Island, with only one person per 1,200 square miles (2,200 km²). The town is home to four separate beaches which are open year round. The population of the town was 13,506 as of the census of 2010, with 15,424 households residing in the town. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.01.

History

Riverhead is the primary city name, but also Flanders are acceptable city names or spellings, Northampton on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Town of Riverhead. European colonists purchased the "Southold land" from the local Algonquian-speaking Native Americans and Shinnecock Indian Nation in 1649. An additional portion was purchased from Col. William Smith and divided among settlers in 1742. The New York State Legislature divided it from the town of Southold, New York, which lies to the north and east. Riverhead was named the county seat of Suffolk County (called a "county town" at the time), and its name was later combined as Riverhead. By 1902, its approximate population was 2,500. The town's first town meeting was scheduled to be held April 3, 1792. It was named after the Riverhead River, which was a tributary of the East River. It is located on Long Island's East River, north of New York City, and east of the New York Turnpike. It has a population of about 2,000 people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The city's name is derived from the River Head River, a stream that once ran through the center of the town, and is now part of the Town of Riverhead, which is located to the south of the city. The name Riverhead comes from the word "river," which means "head" or "headwaters" in English, and means "river" in French. It also means "town of the same name" in Italian, "Riverhead" and "riverhead".

It is located in the eastern part of Long Island, on the East Coast of New York state, and on the West Coast of Connecticut, on Long Island's eastern shore. It has a population of 1,715,000 (as of the 2010 Census). It is the largest town in New York State, followed by the city of N.Y. and the state of New Jersey, with a total population of 2,716,000. It lies on the eastern edge of the Hamptons region of the New York City metropolitan area, and is on the northern tip of New England's Eastern Seaboard. It was the site of the first recorded European settlement, in 1788, and has been home to some of the world's first settlers, including the first Europeans.

Government and politics

Riverhead has a town council government. There is an elected Town Supervisor who is elected by the entire town, and four "at large" Town Council seats. The Town Supervisor term is for two years and four years for council seats. As of 2016, there is a 12 year term limit for Town Council members and the Town Supervisor. Members of the board cannot serve 12 consecutive years. That means that they could take a break after serving their 12 years and then run for office once again. Prior to 1956, the Town Council consisted of the Town supervisor and four Justices of the Peace. The current Town Council consists of two Town Councilmembers and two Town Supervisor members, plus the Town Clerk and Town Attorney. The Council has a term limit of 12 years, but members can serve up to four years in a row if they are re-elected to a second term. The town has a population of 2,000. The council has a seat limit of 10. The mayor is the mayor of the town of Riverhead, New York, and the town supervisor is the town's town supervisor.

The Town of Riverhead is served primarily by Suffolk County Transit and Hampton Jitney bus routes. The town contains a minor private-use airport known as the Calverton Executive Airpark, originally the Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant. The Long Island Rail Road's Main Line is the sole line within the Town ofRiverhead. The only active station is Riverhead, which is also used as the western terminus of the Railroad Museum of Long Island. The Town is home to the New York State Psychiatric Center and the Stony Brook University Medical Center, as well as a number of private hospitals and other medical facilities.
