Syosset is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Oyster Bay, in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 19,259 at the 2020 census. Syosset gained some territory between the 2000 census and 2010 census from Muttontown, and also lost some territory which was annexed to the Village of Laurel Hollow. It is accessible to New York City by the LIRR and the Long Island Expressway by car. It has a large Jewish population, as well as a large number of residents of East Asian origin. The fire department consists of five all-volunteer fire companies and one all-Volunteer EMS company. At 14.4 square miles, it is the largest coverage area of Engauge County, with a fleet of five fire trucks and two ambulances. The town is home to the New York State Fire Department, which operates out of three Fire Stations, located throughout the Syossets, Woodbury, and parts of Muttentown, Oyster Cove, and portions of Plainview, Cold Spring, East Norwich, Plainview and Hicksville. It also has the Jericho Water District, which provides water to the town of Jericho, and the Jericho Public Library, which also serves the town's public school system. The city of Jericho has a fire department that operates out out of the Fire Department's Fire Station No. 1, which is located in Woodbury.

Geography

The Syosset CDP absorbed the hamlet and former CDP of Locust Grove for the 1990 census. It gained some territory between the 2000 census and 2010 census from Muttontown, and also lost some territory which was annexed to the Village of Laurel Hollow. It is accessible to New York City by the LIRR and the Long Island Expressway by car. It borders Oyster Bay and Laurel Hollow to the north, Woodbury to the east, Plainview and Hicksville to the south, and Jericho and Mut tontown to the west. It has a total area of 5.0 square miles (13 km²) according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The CDP is located approximately 32 miles (50 km) east of Midtown Manhattan, and 168 miles (270 km) southeast of Albany, the state capital. It also has a population of 2,788. It was the site of the World War II-era Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The town is located on Long Island's East River, which runs through the center of the CDP. The area is also known as "The Big Apple" because of its proximity to the East River and the New Jersey Turnpike. The city's population peaked in the 1950s and 1960s, when it had more than 3,000 residents. The population has declined slightly since the 1970s and 1980s, and is now around 2,000.

Syosset is protected by the firefighters and EMTs of the Syosset Fire Department. At 14.4 square miles, it is the largest coverage area in Nassau County. TheSFD has five fire companies, and one ambulance company, and has a rescue team of 3. It is located in the town of Woodbury and covers the towns of SyossET, Oysters Bay Cove and Laurel Hollow. It also covers parts of Mettontown and Oysterbay Cove, and the Town of East Norwich and East Norwich.

The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt takes place in Syosset in 1967. In Adam Sandler's Mr. Deeds, Winona Ryder's character says she is originally fromSyosset. In the 2021 television series Gossip Girl the character Julien Calloway mentions that she turned down a sponsorship from a strip mall in SyOSSet in the first episode of season 1. In Soapdish, Whoopi Goldberg's character reveals that Montana Moorhead was formerly Milton Moorhead of Syossett, Long Island. The asteroid 250774 SyossET, discovered by Richard Kowalski in 2005, was named for the hamlet. The official naming citation was published by the Minor Planet Center on January 9, 2020 (M.P.C. 120069), and the asteroid was named after the Long Island hamlet of the same name by the International Astronomical Union (I.A.I.U.N.C). The asteroid was discovered in 2005 and named by the IAU on January 8, 2005. It is now a minor planet with a mass of about 1.2 billion kilometers (1.6 billion) and a diameter of about 2.4 miles (3.4 million meters) The asteroid's name means "little planet" or "small planet" in English. It was discovered on January 7, 2005, and named after a hamlet on Long Island, New York. It has a surface area of about 3.5 square miles (7.5 km).
