Holtsville is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 19,714 at the 2010 census. An IRS Processing Center is located in Holtsville, along with NYPA's Richard M. Flynn Power Plant. In 1916, the Suffolk County Tuberculosis Sanatorium opened on land that is now part of the hamlet of Selden. The site later became the location of the main campus of Suffolk County Community College. As of 2016, the Internal Revenue Service inholtsville has the lowest ZIP Code (00501) in use in the United States, and is home to the Harold H. Malkmes Wildlife Education and Ecology Center, a public park and landfill. The hamlet is mainly in the Town of Brookhaven, while the southwestern portion is in the towns of Islip and Long Island City. In 1843, the Long Island Rail Road opened its Waverly station. In 1860, the name was changed to Holtsvile, in honor of U.S. Postmaster General Joseph Holt. The rail era ended in 1998, when a number of LIRR stations closed due to low ridership. In 1972, the IRS opened a large processing center on a 67-acre (270,000 m2) site in the hamlets. The CDP has a total area of 7.1 square miles (18.4 km²), all land.

History

In 1843, the Long Island Rail Road opened its Waverly station. In 1860, the name of the hamlet was changed to Holtsville in honor of U.S. Postmaster General Joseph Holt. In 1916, the Suffolk County Tuberculosis Sanatorium opened on land that is now part of Selden. The Internal Revenue Service opened a large processing center on a 67-acre (270,000 m2) site in the hamlets in 1972. As of 2016, the ZIP Code (00501) is the lowest in use in the United States. In 1998, the LIRR closed a number of stations in the area due to low ridership. The rail era inHoltsville ended in 1998, when the station was closed due to poor ridership, and commuters were advised to use Medford and Ronkonkoma stations. More use Ronk onkoma because, except for a few peak-hour trains terminating in Mineola or Hicksville, boarding at Medford would require transfer to an electric train at RonkOnkoma anyway. The ZIP Code has the lowest use of any ZIP Code in the U.N. as of 2016; it is used by the Internal Revenue service. It is also the location of the main campus of Suffolk County Community College, which was opened in 1972 on the site of a former tuberculosis sanatorium. It has a population of 2,000. The hamlet is located on Long Island's East Side.

Holtsville is home to the Harold H. Malkmes Wildlife Education and Ecology Center. The center is a public zoo and ecological park located on the site of a former landfill. Some of the amenities at the park include: a triple pool complex; exercise-trail fitness course; nature preserve and ecology center, featuring buffalo, bobcats, eagles, ecology exhibits and tours, free compost, greenhouses and a picnic area.

The Sachem School District serves the residents of Holtsville. The district was established in the early 1900s. It is located on the banks of the Sachem River. The Sachem County School District was founded in the late 1800s. The school district is located in the town of Sachem, Indiana.
