Commack (KOH-mak) is a hamlet and census designated place (CDP) that roughly corresponds to the hamlet by the same name in the towns of Huntington and Smithtown. The name "Commack" comes from the Secatogue Native American tribe who lived on the South Shore of Long Island between Copiague and Bayport. The American Basketball Association's New York Nets, later the New Jersey Nets, and now the Brooklyn Nets, played their second season (196869) at the Long Island Arena in Commack. Musician Peter Frampton recorded some tracks for the album Frampton Comes Alive! during a concert at the arena. Commack is home to the oldest Methodist Church building in New York state, the Commack Methodist Church, built in 1789 as the Comac Church. The National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is located in the Suffolk Y Community Center. The Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2016. The Long Island Expressway, the Northern State Parkway, the Sunken Meadow State Parkway and the at-grade Jericho Turnpike all pass through the CDP. The CDP has a total area of 12.0 square miles (31.0 km²) according to the U.S. Census Bureau, all land. History

The name "Commack" comes from the Secatogue Native American tribe who lived on the South Shore of Long Island between Copiague and Bayport. The name may have been inspired because of the area's flat lands with rich soil, and thick oak forests abounding with plants and wildlife. From its earliest days, Commack or originally spelled as Comac was known for its fertile soil which made it the perfect land for farming. Today all of Commack is settled and suburbanized and, like most unincorporated areas, does not have a true, walkable downtown or "Main Street" The name Commack means "pleasant lands" or "pleasant land" in the local dialect. The town was originally called Winnecomac which means " pleasant lands" and later "Comac" which meant "frivolous lands" The town is located on Long Island's South Shore and was originally known as "Winnecomacs" and then as "Comack" and finally as "Commacks" It is now a suburb of New York City and has a population of about 3,000 people. It is located in the northern part of the Long Island Peninsula. The community is located near the northern tip of the island and is known as the "North Shore" area. It was once the center of a Native American community called the "Secatogue" tribe which lived in the area. The Secatogos called their northern lands in thecenter of the Island Winne comac or "Pleasant lands" which means 'pleasant lands'.

The town has a population of 1,788. The U.N. World Heritage Center is in the town and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located on the border of Texas and New Mexico, and is on the Texas-New Mexico state line. The city's population is 1,872. It has a land area of 12.0 square miles (31 km²) and a population density of 1,769.0 per square mile (1,869.7 per km²) The town's population was 1,638 in 2010, and 1,902 in 2012. It was the site of the 18th largest city in the United States, before the city was annexed by Texas in the 1950s and 1960s. The community's population has declined since the 1970s and 1980s, when it was at its peak of 2,744 people. It is the largest U.N. base in Alaska, with more than 2,000 troops. The city is also home to a number of Native American tribes, including the Alaska Native Alaskans and the Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islanders. The town's name comes from a Native American tribe, which was once called the "Alaskan Alaskan" or "Alaska Native" It is also the name of a tribe that was once part of the state, but is now a state of its own. The Long Island Ducks played in the Eastern Hockey League's Long Island Pond Series from 1987 to 1989. The team was known as the Long Islanders. The Ducks are now known as The Suffolk Y Ducks. The L.I. Fire Department was formed in 1988 and is based in the town of Suffolk, New York. The fire department was founded in 1989 and is still in existence today. The FDNY is the largest volunteer fire department in Long Island, with more than 2,000 members. The Fire Department is one of the oldest volunteer fire departments in the United States.

In popular culture

The Commack Motor Inn is one of Long Island's most famous landmarks. The Inn is known for its "plush beds", "mirror ball disco room" and "heart-shaped love tubs" In a 1994 interview, actress Rosie O'Donnell recounted, "That's where everyone in high school went to have their first sexual experience" In the American television program Criminal Minds, Special Agent David Rossi's hometown is Commack. American rock band Wheatus heavily referenced Commack on their 2000 debut album in their song Wannabe Gangstar. In the fifth season of the same show, one episode is set in Commack (although it was shot in Los Angeles). Commack Middle School was also on one of MTV's True Life episodes. On November 14, 2006, radio station WBLI rated the Commack motor Inn second of the seven wonders of Long island, just behind the Flanders Duck and ahead of the Montauk Lighthouse. It was rated as the second best place to stay in Long Island, behind only the Montfair Lighthouse, which is also on the island's most popular radio station, WCBS-FM. It is now considered one of the most beautiful places in the world to live, with views of the East River and the East End of New York City among its most beautiful sights. The Commack Inn is located on the East Side of Long Islanders. It has been closed since the mid-1980s, when it was still considered a popular destination.
