Central Islip is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) within the Town of Islip in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 34,450 at the 2010 census. Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the Secatogue tribe of Algonquin native-American people lived in the area now known as Central Islip. The Long Island Rail Road's eastward expansion reached the area, and the Suffolk County Station was opened up in 1842. In 1889, what became the Central Is Lip Psychiatric Center opened. By 1955, it housed over 10,000 patients. In 2000, the baseball stadium for Independent league team Long Island Ducks opened up. A new federal courthouse complex opened, claimed to be the second largest in the country. History and overview
Central Islip is an area of Long Island, New York. It was once home to the Secatogue tribe of Algonquin native-American people. In 1889, what became the Central Islip Psychiatric Center opened. By 1955, it housed over 10,000 patients, and closed in 1996. In 2000, the baseball stadium for Independent league team Long Island Ducks opened up. In the mid-1990s, a new federal courthouse complex opened, claimed to be the second largest in the country. It is located on part of the site of the former Central Is Lip Psychiatric Center's 788-acre (3.19 km²) campus. In 2009, the Long Island Rail Road's eastward expansion reached the area, and the Suffolk County Station, became the commercial center for housing. In 2010, the Central islip train station was built, but it is in a different location from all of its predecessors. In 2012, the New York City Marathon was held in the area. It took place in the town of Islip, which is on Long Island's East Side. It has a population of around 4,000. The town is home to a number of housing developments, including College Woods, Islip Landing, and Waddington Estates. In 2013, the town celebrated its 50th anniversary of its incorporation as a city. It also celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2014, with the opening of a new high school, the College Woods High School. In 2015, the city celebrated its 150th anniversary with a parade.

It also has a high school with a enrollment of about 2,000 students. It was once home to New York State College of Art and Design, which is now part of New York University-Queens. It has also been home to a number of private schools, including St. Mary's School of the Arts and St. Patrick's School for the Arts, among other private schools. The town is also the site of the Long Island School of Music, which was founded in the 1930s and is located on the same site as the original New York state high school. It closed in the 1970s. It reopened in the 1990s as a private school, and has since become a magnet school for students from all over New York and New Jersey.
