Amityville is a village near the Town of Babylon in Suffolk County, on the South Shore of Long Island, in New York. The population was 9,523 at the 2010 census. Annie Oakley was said to be a frequent guest of vaudevillian Fred Stone. Will Rogers had a home across Clocks Boulevard from Stone. Gangster Al Capone also had a house in the community. It is the setting of the book The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson, which was published in 1977 and has been adapted into a series of films starting in 1979. The house featured in the novel still exists but has been renovated and the address changed in order to discourage tourists from visiting it. The Dutch Colonial Revival architecture house built in 1927 was put on the market in May 2010 for $1.15 million and sold in September for $950,000 (equivalent to $ 1.2 million in 2021) Amityille has been a sister city with Le Bourget, France since 1979. It has a total area of 2.5 square miles (6.5 km²), of which 2.1 sq miles (5.4 km²) is land and 0.4 square miles is water, comprising a total of 15.38% water. The place name is strictly speaking an incidental name, marking an amicable agreement on the choice of a place name. The name was first suggested by mill owner Samuel Ireland to name the town for his boat, the Amity.

In December 1975 George and Kathy Lutz and Kathy's three children moved into the house, but left after twenty-eight days, claiming to have been terrorized by paranormal phenomena produced by the house. In November 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot all six members of his family at 112 Ocean Avenue, killing all six of them. The family moved back to their old home in Suffolk County, New York.

The village has an area of 15.38% water, of which 2.1 square miles is land and 0.4 sq miles (1.0 km²) is water. It has a population of 2,816. The Village of Amityvillle is located in the Town of Hempstead, on Long Island, New York. It is located on the East River, a tributary of the Long Island River, which runs through the village. The town's population was 2,715 in the U.S. Census Bureau's most recent survey, which took place in the year 2000. The population of the village was 1,814. It was the most populous town in the state at the time of the 2000 census, with 1,716 residents. The city's population has declined since the 1950s and 1960s, when it had 1,938 residents. Its population has increased to 2,917 in the 2010 Census. The U.N. World Heritage Site is in the village, and it is home to the World War II Memorial, which was built in the 1930s. The World War I Memorial was dedicated on September 11, 1941.

The Amityville beach is located in the Great South Bay. Sand Island is an island directly south of the beach and only accessible by boat. The Mike James Courts at Bolden Mack Park is not in the Village. The Lauder Museum is located at the corner of Broadway and Ireland Place, just south of The Triangle. It is an unincorporated section of the Town of Babylon, north of, and immediately adjacent to, the Village ofAmityville. The Amityille Historical Society opened the Lauder Museum in 1972. The library is located on the second floor of a building that was built for the Bank of AmityVILLE in 1909. It was later converted into a museum in the 1970s. The village is home to the New York State Museum, which is open to the public. The museum was opened in 1972 and is on the third floor of the building that is currently used as a public gallery. The Museum is open daily from 9am to 5pm and on the weekends from 10am to 6pm. The Village of Amitiesville is home of the Amities Museum, a museum dedicated to the history and culture of the village. It has been open since 1972 and has a collection of more than 1,000 pieces of memorabilia.
