Long Beach is an oceanfront city in Nassau County in New York, United States. It takes up a central section of the Long Beach Barrier Island, which is the westernmost of the outer barrier islands off Long Island's South Shore. It was incorporated in 1922, and is nicknamed "The City by the Sea" (the Latin form, Civitas ad mare, is the city's motto) The city's first inhabitants were the Algonquian-speaking Lenape, who sold the area to English colonists in 1643. In 2022, Long Beach was named the best East Coast beach town for a summer getaway by Time Out magazine. In 1930, the prohibition agents known as Izzy and Moe raided the Nassau Hotel and arrested three men for bootgging. In 1931, the body of a young woman named Faith Starr was found on the beach, believed to have drowned, but she had left a suicide note, and the circumstances of her death were never resolved. The city was designated a state city in 1922; the state Legislature designated Long Beach a city in 1924. It became an incorporated village in 1913; it was named a city by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1926. It is located on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), which laid track from Lynbrook to Long Beach in 1880. In its first season, the railroad brought 300,000 visitors to Long Island. By the next spring, tracks had been laid the length of the island, but they were removed in 1894 after repeated washouts.

History

Long Beach is the primary city name, but also E Atlantc Bch, E Atlantic Beach, East Atlantic Beach, Lido Beach are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Long Beach. Long Beach's first inhabitants were the Algonquian-speaking Lenape, who sold the area to English colonists in 1643. Austin Corbin, a builder from Brooklyn, was the first to attempt to develop the island as a resort. William H. Reynolds, a 39-year-old real estate developer and former state senator, became involved in the area. The community became an incorporated village in 1913 and a city in 1922. In 1939, Mayor Louis F. Edwards was fatally shot by a police officer in front of his home. After Edwards' murder, the city passed legislation to adopt a city manager system, which still exists to this day. In 1940, PBA Boulevard was later renamed in honor of the late mayor, and PBA president Jackson Jackson was elected president of the City Council for the first time in his life. In 2011, Long Beach was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its contribution to the art and culture of the Mediterranean world. It is also known as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States, with a population of more than 1.5 million. The city's name is derived from the word "Long", which means "long" or "beach" in Spanish. It was also the name of a U.S. Navy ship that was built in the early 20th century, the USS Long Beach, and the Long Island Railroad Co., which laid track from Lynbrook to Long Beach in 1880. The Long Beach Hotel, a row of 27 cottages along a 1,100-foot (340 m) strip of beach, which he claimed was the world's largest hotel.

Geography

Long Beach has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa) under the Köppen climate classification, with humid hot summers and cool winters. Fewer than 40% of the homes are detached houses, and the city ranks as the 35th-densest community in the United States. The city is less than 1 mile (1.6 km) wide from ocean to bay and about 3.5 miles (5.6km) long. Long Beach's City Hall is located in the Central District, which is home to many small bungalows and large houses close to one other, along small narrow streets. The East End is a neighborhood between Monroe Boulevard and Maple Boulevard or Curley Street, with 4 parallel canals originating from Reynolds Channel. The Westholme neighborhood is between New York Avenue and Magnolia Boulevard, home to the Long Beach Housing Authority. The North Park neighborhood is north of Park Avenue, between the LIRR Station and Long Beach Road. The Central District contains museums, community centers, and historic and historic districts, including the Kennedy Plaza and the Martin Luther King Museum.

Demographics

In 2000, there were 14,923 households, out of which 21.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.0% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 45.7% were non-families. The majority of the religious population are Christian and the Catholic Church is the largest single denomination. The second largest religion practiced in the city is Judaism, followed by Islam and Buddhism. The remainder of the population is irreligious or atheist. The average household size was 2,26 and the average family size was 3.02 per square mile (2,914.0/km²). In 2019 there were an average of 2.31 persons per household and the median household income was $97,022.

Government

The city of Long Beach has an extensive parks and recreation program led by Joseph Brand II. Within the offerings include, but are not limited to, the Ice Arena, Summer Camps, Pool, Races and is most notoriously known for its Ocean Beach Park. The city has a comprehensive emergency services structure consisting of multiple organizations, including the Long Beach Police Department, Long Beach Fire Department, Lifeguards, Animal Control and Emergency Medical Services (LBFD), Long Beach Auxiliary Police Department. Long Beachs Ocean Beach park (OBP) is managed under the supervision of Nichole Landry. All city parks and Recreation programs are found online at longbeachny.gov. The Long Beach City Council is made up of five members: John Bendo, Karen McInnis, Scott Mandel, Elizabeth Treston, and Michael Delury. The current city manager is Donna Gayden. The previous city manager was Jack Schnirman, who was elected to Nassau County Comptroller in 2018. The City Council has a budget of $1.2 million. The mayor's salary is $100,000, the city council's budget is $50,000 and the city's police chief is $25,000. The council's purse size is $30,000 per year. It has a cap of $200,000 a year for city council members and $50k per year for the mayor. It is the largest city in Long Beach, New York, with a population of 1.3 million.

Education

The Long Beach City School District serves the city of Long Beach and parts of the Town of Hempstead with one primary high school, one middle school, and one prekindergarten. They also operate an "alternative" high school at the NIKE missile site on a campus shared with the district's transportation services. The Long Beach Public Library serves greater Long Beach with the main library downtown and two branch libraries at Point Lookout and the West End. The district also operates a private school, a college, and a private elementary school. The schools are: Long Beach Catholic Regional School, Mesivta of Long Island, and the Long Island College of Pharmacy. The school district also runs a private high school and an alternative high school in Long Beach. The high school is located at the site of the former Long Beach Air Force Base. The private school is called Long Island Christian School. The public school is known as Long Island City High School, which is located in the city's downtown area. The post-secondary education school is the Rabbinical College of Long Islanders. The elementary school is named Long Island School of the Arts, which was founded in the early 1900s. The middle and elementary schools are called Long Beach Elementary School and Long Beach Middle School, respectively. The final school is Long Beach High School. It is located on the north side of the city and is called the Long Beach School of Arts, Science and Technology, which opened in the 1950s. It was the first public school in the area.

Transportation

Long Beach Bus operates a 24-hour municipal bus service with five routes. Long Island Rail Road operates a terminal station at Park Place and Park Avenue with service on the railroad's Long Beach Branch. Most trains run to Penn Station (Manhattan) or Atlantic Terminal (Brooklyn) Long Beach Bus also operates two seasonal trolley routes, East Loop and West Loop. NICE has two bus routes that originate in Long Beach. The n15 and n33 travel to Roosevelt Field and Far Rockaway, via Rockville Centre and Atlantic Beach, respectively, but the n33 does not provide service wholly within Long Beach, according to the NICE website. The Long Beach Police Department has a station on the Long Beach waterfront, which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The station is open from 7am to 7pm, except for the hours of 11am and 11pm on Saturday and Sunday, when the station is closed. The police department also operates an overnight circulator route, which provides service to Lido Beach and Point Lookout, as well as one route extending to Long Island City, Long Island, and Long Island Island, New York. The city's mayor, Robert Garcia, is a former mayor of Long Beach and served in the New York City Police Department from 1989 to 1993. The mayor was a member of the Long Island Police Department's board of directors from 1987 to 1994, and served as mayor from 1994 to 1998. The current mayor is Robert L. Lomax, who was elected in 2000.
