Inwood is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 9,792 at the 2010 census. It is considered part of Long Island's Five Towns area and is located within the Town of Hempstead. Inwood is home to the famous Inwood Country Club which was the site of the 1921 PGA Championship as well as the 1923 U.S. Open. The first true road in the area, the Inwood end of Lord Avenue, was built when the neighboring village of Lawrence was developed. The CDP has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²), of which 1.7 sq miles (4.4km²) is land and 0.4sq miles (1.0 km²) (20.19%) is water. The town's northernmost and westernmost boundaries border Queens in the City of New York. The area was first settled in the 1600s, and was known as Near Rockaway. The name was changed to North West Point (also spelled as Northwest Point), named after its geographic position in relation to the more central part of Far Rockaway, which it was then part of. By the time of World War I, a large part of Inwood's population was of Italian and Albanian extraction. The post office closed ca. 1920, and it was not until 1949 when a new post office would open in the community (although an unsuccessful attempt was made in 1932).

History

Inwood is the primary city name, but also Far Rockaway are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Inwood, New York. Inwood is home to the famous Inwood Country Club which was the site of the 1921 PGA Championship as well as the 1923 U.S. Open. The first true road in the area, the Inwood end of Lord Avenue, was built when the neighboring village of Lawrence was developed. By the time of World War I, a large part of Inwood's population was of Italian and Albanian extraction. Inwood was first settled in 1600s and was once known as Near Rockaway. Its original settlers were Jamaica Bay fishermen, generally lawless and troublesome to other Rockaway residents. After the American Civil War, the area in 1871 became known as Westville. The Westville designation was used until residents petitioned for the United States Postal Service to establish a post office in the community. The post office refused as a Westville already existed upstate. This led locals to change the community's name to Inwood in December 1888. This name received the most votes; the other proposed names included Bayhead, Springhaven, Radwayton, Elco, Raway, Pike's Peak, and Custer. By changing the name, the locals were able to get aPost office for Inwood, which opened on February 25, 1889. The Inwood post office closed ca. 1920, and it was not until 1949 when a new post office would open in theCommunity (although an unsuccessful attempt was made in 1932). Inwood is now home to a golf course.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²) Inwood's northernmost and westernmost boundaries border Queens in the City of New York. Inwood is bisected by the Nassau Expressway (New York State Route 878). Inwood has a population of 1,828. The CDP is located in the Queens borough of New Yorkers. The city's population is 2,827. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the population of Inwood to be 1,722. The area has a land area of 1.7square miles (4.4km²) and a water area of 0.4sq miles (1.0 km²), with 20.19% of the area covered by water. It is located on New York City's East River, which runs through Inwood. The community is located near the East River and Queens' East River. It has an elevation of 2,716 feet (738m) and an area of 4.4 square miles, or 1.4 km², with 20% of that as water. The town's name is derived from the word "inwood" which means "wood" or "hill" in English. It was also known as "Inwood" and "Ingro" in the 19th century. The current name was coined in the early 20th century as a reference to the area's industrial heritage.

Demographics

In the 2010 U.S. census, there were 9,792 people residing in the CDP. The racial makeup of the C DP was 48.02% White, 24.15% African American, 0.74% Native American, 3.31% Asian and 0.15%. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 42.79% of the population. The median income for a household was $41,334, and the median family income was $48,345. The per capita income for theCDP was $16,009. About 12.4% of families and 14.6% of those under the age of 18 were below the poverty line, including 18. 4% ofThose under age 18 and 13.7% ofthose age 65 or over. The CDP has a population density of 5,488.4 per square mile (2,117.9/km²) The population of 2000 was 9,325, with 3,132 housing units at an average density of 1,843.4/sq mi (711.3/ km²). The racial make-up of the 2000 CDP was 53.25% White. In the 2010 census, the racial Make-up was 49.25%. In the 2000 Census there were 3,041 households, out of which 37.2% had children under 18 living with them. The average household size was 3.06 and the average family size was3.55. For every 100 females, there are 88.5 males.

Government

As Inwood is an unincorporated hamlet, it is governed by the Town of Hempstead. The hamlet is represented as part of the Town's 3rd District, which as of August 2022 is represented by Councilwoman Melissa Miller. Inwood has a population of about 1,000 people. It is located on Long Island's East Coast. The town of Inwood was founded in 1881. In Wood, the first post office opened in 1883. It was named after Inwood, New York, where it is located. The first postmaster was William Inwood. The post office closed in 1885, and was re-opened in 1891. It reopened in 1894, and is still open today. It has a post office, which opened on August 1, 1891, and closed on August 2, 1892. It also has a school, which was opened on July 1, 1901. It closed on September 1, 1903, and reopened on September 2, 1904. The school was closed again on September 3, 1904, and on September 4, 1905. The last postmaster left the school on September 5, 1905, and moved to Inwood to live with his family. He died on September 6, 1906. He was buried in Inwood on September 7, 1907. He is survived by his wife and two children. He has a son and a daughter. He also has two step-daughters, who live in New York City and Long Island. He currently lives in In Wood.

Parks and recreation

Inwood has a park located on a bay with a launching pad into Mott's Basin. The park, which is operated by Nassau County, is called Inwood Park. It is located in the town of Inwood, New York, on Long Island. Inwood is home to the Long Island Rail Road, which runs through the town. It's also home to a number of other parks, including Inwood Lake and Inwood Beach.

Education

Students attend Lawrence Public Schools, which also serves students from Lawrence, Cedarhurst, and Atlantic Beach, and sections of North Woodmere and Woodmere. The school district is part of the Lawrence School District, which was formed in the 1970s. The district was formed to serve students in Lawrence and surrounding areas. It is also serving students from Cedarhurst and Atlantic beach, as well as sections of Woodmere, Woodmere-Cedarhurst and North Woodermere. It was founded in the 1950s and has been in operation since the 1960s.

Infrastructure

The Inwood station on Long Island Rail Road's Far Rockaway Branch is located towards the southern edge of the hamlet. Unlike most Nassau County towns, the neighborhood is primarily serviced by the MTA with the Q113 and Q114 bus routes. Inwood is served by the Nassau Expressway (NY 878) and the Rockaway Turnpike. The hamlet is also served by Nassau Inter-County Express and the n31 bus route, which makes a few stops on the area's far eastern border of Rockawayturnpike, which is also part of the NICE network. It is located in the Queens borough of New York City, on the eastern edge of Long Island, and is located on the Long Island Peninsula, near the city's eastern border with New Jersey. It has a population of about 2,000. The Inwood train station is located near Jamaica station, with connections to Pennsylvania Station and Atlantic Terminal. It also has connections to Atlantic Terminal and Jamaica station on the New Jersey side of the Queens Peninsula. It was built in the early 1900s and was originally known as "Inwood" by the locals.
