Orangeburg is a hamlet and census-designated place in Rockland County, New York, United States. It is located north of Tappan, south of Blauvelt, east of Pearl River and west of Piermont. The population was 4,568 at the 2010 census. It was the site of Camp Shanks, known as "Last Stop USA", the largest World War II Army embarkation camp. The hamlet also has one of the world's largest psychiatric hospitals, Rockland Psychiatric Center, formerly called Rockland State Hospital. Orangeburg pipe was once manufactured here, before plastic pipes, especially for sewer and outdoor drainage applications. It lies only 19 miles (31 km) north of New York City, but can be reached from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan, where there are bus stops on Western Highway and Highview Avenue. It was once known as Orangeburg, which means "the town of Orange" or "the city of Orange". The town's name is derived from the word "village" which means "town" or "city" in English. It was also the name of a former village in New Hampshire.

Landmarks and places of interest

During World War II, over 1.3 million G.I.s were processed from Camp Shanks to Europe and North Africa. The camp is located at Independence Avenue and Lowe Lane off Western Highway. The Douglas House is a Dutch Colonial farmhouse owned by Marjorie Douglas and her late husband Henry that since 1981 has been used for several New York-based film and television productions, including Saturday Night Live and Marvel's Daredevil. New York City FC's training facility is located in Orangeburg. Orangeburg has some of the tallest buildings in Rockland County, including the tallest building in the county, the Orangeburg Courthouse, which is located on South Greenbush Road near the intersection of Routes 303 and 340. It is also home to the New York Yankees, New York Mets and New York Knicks. The Orangeburg High School is a public high school located in the town of Orangeburg and is open to the public on weekdays and weekends. It was founded in 1903 and is one of the oldest public high schools in New York state. It has been the site of numerous high school and college football programs, including New York State High School and the University of New York at St. John's. It also has a number of historic buildings and landmarks, including a National Register of Historic Places site, a National Park Service building, and a National Museum of American History and Culture. The town is home to some of Rockland's most famous landmarks, such as the Shanks Museum and Monument, which was built in 1945.

Transport of Rockland (TOR) Bus #92 offers service to Artopee Way in Nyack and to the Spring Valley Transit Center. TOR Bus #97 offers service on New York State Route 303 to Oak Tree Road in Tappan and to a Park and Ride on Highway 9W in Stony Point. The Town of Orangeburg has a population of about 1,000.
