Cape May Court House is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) located within Middle Township in Cape May County, New Jersey, United States. It is part of the Ocean City Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 United States Census, the CDP's population was 5,338. The CDP is the county seat and administrative hub for the township of Cape May. Cape Regional Medical Center, known as Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital until April 2007, is the only hospital in the county. The Cape May Park and Zoo is also located in the town. The town was laid out in 1703 by Jeremiah Hand and was first called Rumney Marsh and afterward Middleton before the adoption of its present name. The U.S. Census Bureau says the town has a total area of 9.899 square miles (25.639 km²) of land and 0.973 square miles of water (9.83%). The town is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which runs from New Jersey to New York. The Turnpix is a popular tourist destination in New Jersey. The city is also home to the Cape May Zoo, which is open to the public on weekends and during the summer months. It has a population of 2,732. The population of the town is expected to rise to 4,704 as of the 2020 U.S. census. The 2010 U.N. World Population Study found that the majority of the world's population is living in the United States, and that it is the most populous place in the world.

History

Cape May Court House is the primary city name, but also Cape May Ch are acceptable city names or spellings, Burleigh, Clermont, Mayville, Swainton on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Cape May Court House, New Jersey. Cape May Court House was laid out in 1703 by Jeremiah Hand and was first called Rumney Marsh and afterward Middleton before the adoption of its present name. The Court of Cape May County met in private homes and the First Baptist Church until 1764, when Daniel Hand set 1-acre (4,000 m2) of his own property to construct a courthouse and jail. It was replaced by the current structure in 1849. The current courthouse was built by Daniel Hand in 1764 and cost $1,000,000 to build. It is located in Cape May, New Jersey, on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The courthouse is located on a site that was once part of the New Jersey Turnpike, and is now the site of the Cape May International Airport. It has a parking lot that was built in the early 1800s and was used as a jail until 1849, when it was replaced with the current courthouse. The court house was built on a plot of land that was originally part of a private home, and was later used to house the county's court of appeals. The county was once known as Cape May Marsh, but the name was later changed to Cape May Court. The town's name is now used to refer to the courthouse and to the town's historic center, which is located at the center of the town. In 1849 the county was granted the right to name the courthouse after a group of men who had served in the military during the Revolutionary War.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the CDP had a total area of 9.899 square miles (25.639 km²) of land and 0.973 sq miles (2.520 km² of water (9.83%) of water. The CDP has a population of 2,816. The town is located in the northern part of the state of New Mexico. It is the only CDP in the state to have a population over 2,000. The population of the town is 2,081. It has an area of 8.926 square miles of land (23.118 km²), including 8,926 sq miles of water, and a population density of 9,899 sq miles per square mile (25,639km²) per square kilometer (9,826/km²). The town has a total population of 3,814. It was the first CDP to be incorporated in the United States, in 1859. The city's population was 2,788 in 1855. It had a census-designated place (CDP) in 1857. The current CDP was established in 1858, and its population was 3,716 in 1881. It became a CDP on July 1, 1881, and was incorporated in 1882. The area has a history of being part of New Jersey and New Mexico, and has been in the same state since 1859, when it was first incorporated.

As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 4,704 people, 1,732 households, and 1,221 families residing in the CDP. The Census Bureau's 2006-2010 American Community Survey showed that (in 2010 inflation-adjusted dollars) median household income was $56,773. The racial makeup of the C DP was 84.35% White, 10.88% African American, 0.19% Native American, 2.70% Asian, 0,062% Pacific Islander, and 2.40% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.03% (162) of thePopulation. The CDP has a population density of 598.0 per square mile (230.9/km²) with 2,603 housing units at an average density of 291.6 per squaremile (112.6/ km²) The 2010 United States census counted 5,338 people, 2,165 households, & 1,396 families.

Education

Middle Township Public Schools is the local school district for Middle Township. All four schools and the district headquarters are in Cape May Court House CDP. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Camden operates Bishop McHugh Regional School, a Catholic K-8 school, in Ocean View, Dennis Township, which has a Cape May Courthouse postal address. Church Street Christian School, 18 months to preschool, is on the property of its sponsor, First United Methodist Church. It was formerly a Montessori school. Special needs students may be referred to Cape May County Special Services School District in CapeMay Court House. There is a private Christian K-12 school in Middle Township, Cape Christian Academy. It is in the CMCH CDP and has a CMCH postal address, but is not within the CDP boundaries. The school is supported by four parishes in cape May County including the Cape MayCourthouse Church. The CDP has its Cape May courthouse branch in the town of Burleigh. The town of Dennis Township has a branch of Cape May Library in the court house. The library has a CDP branch in Dennis Township. The township also has its own branch of the New York City Public Library in South Nyack, New York, which is not in the C DP. The county library's South Nyck branch is in South New York. The North Nyack branch is also in the Court House section of the town, but it has no CDP address. There are no schools in the North Nyck area of the county.

Parks and recreation

Cape May County Park & Zoo provides free year-round admission to a collection of over 550 animals. The zoo is located in the center of Cape May County's Central Park, and together the zoo and the park cover about 220 acres. Its principal exhibit areas are a 57-acre African Savanna, a free-flight aviary, and a reptile collection. The Clarence and Georgiana Davies Sports Complex includes basketball courts, soccer fields, and baseball fields. The Middle Township Recreation Department hosts multiple sports comprised of indoor basketball courts, baseball fields, football fields and soccer fields. It is located on the edge of the Cape May Court House area of New Jersey. The park and zoo are open to the public all year round, but the zoo is open only during the summer months. It has a total of 85 acres of exhibits, including an AfricanSavanna, reptile and bird collection, and an aviary. It also has a baseball field, football field, soccer field, and other sports fields.
