Blackwood is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) located within Gloucester Township, in Camden County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the CDP's population was 4,545. It is located 10 miles (16 km) from the city of Camden and 14.6 miles (23.5 km) away from Philadelphia. Blackwood is the home of the main campus of Camden County College, in addition to other campus locations in Camden and Cherry Hill. The area was a crossroads village along the Black Horse Pike well into the nineteenth century, when Uriah Norcross established a stage coach line between Camden and Woodbury with a stop at a tavern in Blackwoodtown. The arrival of the Camden County Railroad in 1891 led to further development of Blackwood Lake, which operated as a summer resort from 1891 until 1932. The U.S. Census Bureau says Blackwood had a total area of 1.235 square miles (3.199 km²), including 1.226 square miles of land and 0.009 sq miles (0.023 km²) of water. Bodies of water include Blackwood lake and Farrows Run stream. The CDP is home to Camden County college's radio station, WDBK, as well as a number of parks and recreation facilities. The town is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which runs from New Jersey to New York City and the Delaware River.

History

Blackwood is the primary city name, but also Turnersville are acceptable city names or spellings, Blenheim, Chews Landing, Hilltop, Lakeland on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Blackwood, New Jersey. Blackwood, originally known as Blackwoodtown, was settled about 1750 by John Blackwood. The area was a crossroads village along the Black Horse Pike well into the nineteenth century. The arrival of the Camden County Railroad in 1891 led to further development. Blackwood Lake operated as a summer resort from 1891 until 1932. The town of Blackwood is located in Camden County, New Jersey, near the town of Woodbury. It is the site of the former Blackwood Mill, which was built in 1750, and the current Blackwood Town, which opened in 1780. The village is located on the Blackhorse Pike, which runs through the town, and runs through Woodbury, where it is also known as "Head of Timber Creek" and "Blackwood Lake" The town's name is derived from Blackwood, a Scotsman who immigrated from Scotland and established mills in the area in the 1750s and 1760s. The name Blackwood means "head of the creek" or "the head of the stream" and means "to head" in Scots. The word "blackwood" means "wood" in English, and "woodtown" is the name of the village's first inhabitant, a fuller who moved to the area around 1750. The current name comes from the word "wood," which means "woods" or, "wooded" in the English language. The community's name was first used as a place of business by Uriah Norcross in the 1830s.

The Town of Blackwood was named after Blackwood, a former member of the KKK, who was killed in a shootout with police in the early 1900s. The village is located on the Blackwoods River, which flows through Blackwood and into the Blackwater River. It was named for Blackwood County, which was once a part of the bootheel area of thebootheel National Forest, and is now part of South Dakota's Bootheels National Park. The community is located near Blackwood Road, which runs through a section of the town called Blackwood Springs, which is also known as "Blackwood Springs" The town's name is derived from the name of a Blackwood family, who lived in the area in the late 1800s and early 19th century. It also means "blackwood" or "blacksmith" in the local dialect. It has an area of about 1.226 square miles, or 3.176 km².

The 2010 U.S. census counted 4,545 people, 1,687 households, and 1,210 families in the CDP. The racial makeup of the section was 88.71% (4,032) White, 5.21% (237) Black or African American, 0.04% (2) Native American, 2.53% (115) Asian,0.00% (0) Pacific Islander, 1.63% (74) from other races and 1.87% (85) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.94% (270) of the population. There were 1,840 housing units at an average density of 572.9/km² (1,483.2/mi2) In the section the population was spread out, with 24.1% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 22.1%. For every 100 females ages 18 and older there were 95.1 males. The median income for a household in the section. was $49,707, and the median income. for a family was $60,136. About 0.9% of families and 4.0% of those under age 18 were below the poverty line, including 0.6% of the under-18 population. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.19.

Historic district

The Blackwood Historic District is a 42-acre (17 ha) national historic district. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 27, 1989 for its significance in commerce and community development. The district includes 87 contributing buildings, 3 contributing structures, and 3 contributing sites. The Blackwood First Methodist Episcopal Church was built in 1856 with Greek Revival/Italianate style. It is located on the Black Horse Pike, Baptist Lane, Church and Elm streets, Central and East Railroad avenues in the community. It has been listed on the National register of historic places since June 27, 1990. The National Register is a federal program that places buildings on the register for preservation and protection of historic sites. It also provides funding for research into historic places and places. The District is home to the Blackwood Museum, which was established in 1858. The Museum is located in the Blackhorse Building, which dates back to the 17th century. The museum is on the site of the original Blackwood Baptist Church, which opened in 1854. It's also home to a number of other historic buildings, including the 1856 Blackwood Methodist Church, built in the Italianate style with a Greek Revival-style facade. The historic district includes three contributing structures and three contributing sites: a house, a church, and a school. It includes a cemetery, which is part of the district, as well as a historic site for the Black horse, a cemetery for blacksmiths, and an 1856 blacksmith shop.

Education

Gloucester Township is home to several public schools. Our Lady of Hope Regional School is a Roman Catholic elementary school that operates under the auspices of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Camden. The Kingdom Charter School of Leadership is a charter school that serves students in Kindergarten through sixth grade residing in Gloucester Township, who are accepted by lottery on a space-available basis.Higher education in Blackwood includes Pennco Tech and Camden County College. The Black Horse Pike Regional School District is part of the Gloucester County Public Schools district. The district also includes Charles W. Lewis Middle School, Highland Regional High School, and Blackwood Elementary School. The school district was formed after the 2008 merger of St. Jude's Regional School with St. Agnes School. It is located in the town of Blackwood, New Jersey, and is located on the New Jersey Turnpike near the town's southern border with New Jersey and New York City. It has a population of about 3,000 people. It was founded in the 18th century. The town is located near the site of the former town of Gloucester, which was once known as Gloucester City.
