Shrewsbury is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. It is located in the Jersey Shore region in the New York Metropolitan area. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 3,809, reflecting an increase of 219 (+6.1%) from the 3,590 counted in the 2000 Census. It was formed as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 22, 1926, from portions of Shrew'sbury Township. The borough's name comes from Shrew’sbury, England. The Parker Homestead, one of the oldest structures in the state, was built by early settlers to the region. Many of the early settlers of the region originated from Long Island, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Borough had a total area of 2.19 square miles (5.67 km²) of land and 0.03 square miles of water (1.32%). The borough borders the municipalities of Eatontown, Little Silver, Oceanport, Red Bank, Shrewsburys Township and Tinton Falls. The Borough's name is a contraction of the word "Shrew" which means "shrew" or "shuffle" in English and "bury" in French. It has a population of 3,800, up from 3,600 in the 1950s. The population of the borough in the 1990 Census had increased by 494 (+16.0%) from 2,096 in the 1980s.

History

Shrewsbury is the primary city name, but also Red Bank are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Borough of Shrewsbury . Shrewsbury was part of the Navesink Patent or Monmouth Tract granted soon after the creation of East Jersey in 1665. The Parker Homestead, one of the oldest structures in the state, was built by early settlers to the region. Many of the early settlers of the region originated from Long Island, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. It was originally formed on October 31, 1693, and was created as a township by the Township Act of 1798 of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798. It retained its size and scope until 1750, when various different municipalities began to break off from it. The first of those being Stafford Township, which was formed in 1750 and taking away much of modern-day Ocean County. Sh Drewsbury Borough broke off from Shrew'sbury Township, andwas officially established on May 11, 1926. It is located in Monmouth County, along with the other historic towns of Freehold in western Monmouth and Middletown in northern Monmouth. It has a population of about 2,000 people, making it the second largest town in New Jersey after New Jersey's Piscataway County. The town is located on the Delaware River, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean at the tip of the southern tip of Cape May County. Its population is about 1,800. It also includes the towns of Middletsown, Freehold, and Freehold Township, as well as parts of Monmouth, Ocean, and Asbury towns.

The borough was once a part of Shrew'sbury Township, which had originally encompassed most of Monmouth and Ocean counties, including several of the other municipalities nearby, until shrinking down to under one square mile in the early 20th century. It is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which connects to the New York City area via the Raritan River and the Delaware River. The Borough has a population of 1,816. It has a land area of 3.2 square miles, including 2.16 square miles of land and 0.03 square mile of water (1.32 km²). The borough has a water area of 0.07 square miles. It was once part of the Shrew’sburry Township, but that was later absorbed by the town of Red Bank and is now a separate borough. It also borders the towns of Little Silver and Little Silver. It had a population in the 1930s of 2,817. It now has a total of 1.816 people, including 1,716 people living in the borough and 1,638 in the surrounding area.

Economy

The Grove at Shrewsbury is an upscale lifestyle center located on Route 35. The center opened in 1988 and has a gross leasable area of 150,000 sq ft (14,000 m2) As of 2022, it is anchored by Brooks Brothers, Anthropologie, J. Crew, Williams Sonoma and Banana Republic, along with other retailers and amenities. It acts as a town square for the borough, as well as the nearby downtown of Red Bank. It is expected to be completed by the end of the decade, and will be the largest shopping center in the state of New Jersey at the time. It will be completed in 2022, when it is expected that the city will have a population of 1.2 million. It has been described as a "luxury shopping mecca" by the New Jersey Retail Association. It was built in the 1980s and 1990s, and is located on the former site of a former train station. It opened its doors in 1988, and has since become one of the city's most popular shopping destinations. It also serves as a focal point for the Red Bank area, which is just a few miles from the center, and the nearby town center of Shrew'sbury, which also opened in the 1990s and is also on the same road. The shopping center will be finished in the next few years, with plans for more stores and amenities to be added in the future. The city's population is estimated to reach 1.3 million by 2022.

Government

Shrewsbury is governed under the Borough form of New Jersey municipal government, which is used in 218 municipalities (of the 564) statewide. The governing body is comprised of the Mayor and the Borough Council, with all positions elected at-large on a partisan basis as part of the November general election. Monmouth County is governed by a Board of County Commissioners comprised of five members elected to serve three year terms of office on a staggered basis. The borough council appointed Jaclyn Woehnker in February 2022 to fill the seat expiring in December 2023 that had been held by Kimberly Eulner until she stepped down from office in December 2021 to take office in the New Jersey General Assembly. The mayor can veto ordinances subject to an override by a two-thirds majority vote of the council. As of 2022, the mayor of Shrewsburbury Borough is Republican Erik Anderson, whose term of office ends December 31, 2022. For the 117th U.S. Congress, New Jersey's Fourth Congressional District is represented by Chris Smith (R, Manchester Township). New Jersey is represented in the United States Senate by Democrats Cory Booker (Newark, term ends 2027) and Bob Menendez (Harrison, term end 2025). For the 2022-2023 session, the 11th Legislative District of the New. Jersey Legislature is represented. by Vin Gopal (D, Long Branch) and in the General Assembly by Kimberly. Eulner (R) and Marilyn Piperno (R), respectively.

Historic district

The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 17, 1978. Three churches, the Allen House, and the Wardell House are among its 47 contributing buildings. The village was an important transportation artery during colonial times. The district is located along Broad and Sycamore Streets in the town of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. It is located on the Massachusetts Turnpike, which was built in 17th-century Shropshire, England. It was named for its significance in architecture and religion by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1978. It has been listed on the N.N.R.P. list of historic districts since 1978.

Education

The Shrewsbury Borough School District serves public school students ranging from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. As of the 201819 school year, the district, comprised of one school, had an enrollment of 479 students and 50.3 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a studentteacher ratio of 9.5:1. The school features three homerooms per grade, with special classes that include physical education, art, music, computers, and for language, Spanish. For ninth through twelfth grades, students attend Red Bank Regional High School, which serves students from the boroughs of Little Silver, Red Bank and Shrew'sbury. Students from other Monmouth County municipalities are eligible to attend the high school for its performing arts program, with admission on a competitive basis. The borough has two elected representatives on the nine-member Board of Education.Private school options include Christian Brothers Academy or Red Bank Catholic High School. The local Catholic schools, operated by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Trenton, are run by the Catholic Church's Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark and Trenton. The high school had anrollment of 1,208 students and 119.6 classroom teachers as of the 2014-15 school year; for the 2013-14 school year there were 1,207 students and 100 teachers. The district's academy programs are open to students in the district's academies from other communities who areeligible to attend on a tuition basis.

Transportation

As of May 2010, the borough had a total of 21.50 miles (34.60 km) of roadways, of which 16.88 miles (27.17 km) were maintained by the municipality. Route 35 is the main northsouth road in Shrewsbury, while CR 520 is oriented eastwest along the northern border. The Garden State Parkway is accessible in neighboring Tinton Falls or via CR 520 in Middletown.NJ Transit offers train service on the North Jersey Coast Line at the Little Silver station. NJ Transit local bus service is available on the 831 and 832 routes.
