Arlington is a town in Bennington County, Vermont, United States. The town was chartered on July 28, 1761, as part of the New Hampshire Grants. In 1777, Arlington became the first capital of the Vermont Republic. Five prominent peaks are located within the town: Grass Mountain, Spruce Peak, The Ball (also locally referred to as West Mountain), Red Mountain, and Big Spruce Mountain. The highest peak is Grass Mountain at elevation 3,109 ft (948 m) The town has a total area of 42.4 square miles (109.9 km²), of which 42.2 square miles of land is land and 0.19 sq miles (0.5 km²) of water. The Battenkill, famous for trout fishing, flows through the center of town. The population was 2,457 at the 2020 census. The city of Arlington was founded in 1764. It is located in the Taconic Range, between the Green Mountains to the west and the Tierce Range to the east, with most of Arlington's land mass lying in the taconic range. In the years leading up to the American Revolution, both New York and New Hampshire laid claim to lands comprising current-day Vermont. The Province of New York began to grant land in 1765, lagging New Hampshire by four years. Arlington was, for the most part, settled by Anglicans from Roxbury, Newtown, and Milford, Connecticut, with ownership rights derived from New Hampshire grants.

History

Arlington is the primary city name, but also Sandgate, Sunderland, West Arlingtn, West Arlington are acceptable city names or spellings, Arlington Center, Chiselville on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Arlington, Vermont. The town of Arlington was chartered July 28, 1761, by New Hampshire Governor Benning Wentworth, as part of the New Hampshire Grants. In 1777, Arlington became the first capital of the Vermont Republic. In the years leading up to the American Revolution, both New York and New Hampshire laid claim to lands comprising current-day Vermont. Arlington was, for the most part, settled by Anglicans from Roxbury, Newtown, and Milford, Connecticut. British Loyalist citizens in Arlington, united under the leadership of Dr. Samuel Adams, organized an independent military unit, Adams' Rangers, to support the British war effort in the region. During the American Revolutionary War, the Patriot soldiers of the Green Mountain Boys rallied against Loyalist opposition in the town. Gideon Hard, a congressman from New York, was born in Arlington. The first town clerk was Remember Baker, who was the first town Clerk. The town's first postmaster was Thomas Chittenden, who lived in Arlington before the American revolution. The city's first mayor was John Witherspoon, who died in 1777. The current mayor of Arlington is John Sutter, who served as mayor from 1780 to 1783. The last mayor was William Withers, who left Arlington in 1783 to move to New York City. The mayor is now the mayor of Burlington, Vermont, where he served until his death in 1801. He is the son of the former mayor, John Sithers.

Geography

The town is home to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers's Camp Arlington, which is located in the northern part of the town. It is the site of the Camp Arlington National Wildlife Refuge, which was established in the early 1900s to protect the area from the encroaching Green Mountains. The National Park Service has a Ranger Station in the town, which protects the town from wolves, coyotes, and other wild animals. It also protects the Camp Ball, which has been the scene of numerous wildfires in the last few years. The U.N. World Heritage Site is also located in Arlington, and was established by the United Nations in the 1930s. It was the first American town to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List of World Heritage Sites.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,397 people, 1,009 households, and 676 families residing in the town. The racial makeup of the town was 98.08% White, 0.25% Black, 0,08% Native American,0.42% Asian, 0.,08% Pacific Islander, and 0.88% from two or more races. Hispanic of any race were 0.46% of the population. The town's median income was $40,590, and the median income for a family was $49,412. About 6.4% of families and 7.2% of residents were below the poverty line, including 9.3% of those under age 18 and 8.2%. The town is located on the U.S. Census Bureau's West Virginia-Mississippi border. It is the only town in the state to have a post office, which opened in 1881. The U.N. The mission is to help them in their time of need by providing food, shelter, and medical care. Education

Arlington Memorial School is a high school with some 250 students. Arlington is a suburb of Washington, D.C. with a population of about 1.5 million.
