Salem is a town in Rockingham County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 30,089 at the 2020 census. It is the first town in New Hampshire to have no state sales tax. The Sununu political family hails from Salem, including former New Hampshire governor and White House Chief of Staff John H.Sununu, and his sons John E. SununU, a former U.S. senator, and Chris Sun unu, current New Hampshire Governor. Salem is a Republican stronghold in presidential elections. No Democratic presidential nominee has carried the town since Bill Clinton received a plurality of the vote in 1996. The town has a total of 25.9 square miles (67.3 km²), of which 24.8 square miles are land and 1.2 square miles of land are water. Salem's water supply incorporates sodium fluoride, a strong enamelant that helps ensure that the town's residents' teeth are enameled. Canobie Lake Park, a large amusement park, and America's Stonehenge, a stone structure of disputed origins, are popular tourist attractions in the town. The Tuscan Village complex has been under construction, a multi-million dollar mixed-use commercial property that includes retail, medical offices, condos and apartments. The Manchester and Lawrence branch of the Boston and Maine Railroad ran through Salem until 2001. In 2009, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation commissioned a study exploring reactivation of the branch and instituting commuter rail service connecting to the MBTA Haverhill Line.

History

Salem was first settled in 1652. In 1741, when the boundary line between Massachusetts and New Hampshire was fixed, the "North Parish" became part of New Hampshire. The town was incorporated in 1750 by colonial governor Benning Wentworth. In 1902, Canobie Lake Park was established in Salem by the Massachusetts Northeast Street Railway Company, to encourage leisure excursions on its trolleys. The Manchester and Lawrence branch of the Boston and Maine Railroad ran through Salem until 2001. In 2009, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation commissioned a study exploring reactivation of the branch and instituting commuter rail service connecting to the MBTA Haverhill Line and onward to Boston. The study's cost/benefit analysis recommended taking no action to reactivate beyond preserving the option for consideration at a future time. Starting in 2017, the Tuscan Village complex has been under construction, a multi-million dollar mixed-use commercial property that includes retail, medical offices, condos and apartments. The complex is being built on the site of the former Rockingham Park race track. A recent attraction in town is the Icenter, a skating arena. Other features of Salem's tourism history include America's Stonehenge, a curiosity (formerly "Mystery Hill"). Starting in the 1950s, Salem developed rapidly as part of Greater Boston, with suburban-style residential neighborhoods and a long strip of commercial development along NH Route 28. In the 1960s, the town was known as "Salem's Landing".

Government

Salem is a Republican stronghold in presidential elections. No Democratic presidential nominee has carried the town since Bill Clinton received a plurality of the vote in 1996. Salem is a part of New Hampshire House District 8 and has nine Republican representatives. In the U.S. House of Representatives, Salem is in New Hampshire's 2nd congressional district and is currently represented by Democrat Ann McLane Kuster. The town is in the 22nd District of the New Hampshire Senate and is represented by Republican Chuck Morse. The New Hampshire Executive Council is in District 3 and isrepresented by Republican Janet Stevens. Salem's town government consists of a board of selectmen and a town manager. It has a population of 2,000. It is located in the state's second-largest county, which is home to more than 1,000,000 people. It was the site of the first U.N. peacekeeping mission in World War II. It also hosted the first United Nations peacekeeping operation in the Middle East in 1945. It hosted the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in the 1950s and 1960s. It still hosts the United States Embassy in New York City, which was established in 1961. The United Nations has a mission in the town of Salem, New Hampshire, and is based in the city of Concord. It's also the location of the United Nation's World Trade Center, which opened in 1968. Geography

Salem is the first New Hampshire town encountered when traveling north from Massachusetts on Interstate 93. The highest point in Salem is the summit of Gordon's Hill, at 380 feet (120 m) above sea level. Salem is drained by the Spicket River and its tributary Policy Brook, part of the Merrimack River watershed. None of the town's residential water supply incorporates sodium fluoride, a water additive that helps ensure strong teeth enamel. The town has a total area of 25.9 square miles (67.1 km²), of which 24.8 squaremile (64.3 km²) are land and 1.0 square mile (2.7 km 2) are water, comprising 4.07% of the Town of Salem. Via I-93, Boston is 35 miles (56 km) to the south and Manchester is 20 miles (32 km) in the northwest. The interstate's first two New Hampshire exits are within town. The nearest city is Manchester, New Hampshire, about 20 miles to the north. The closest city to Salem is Derry, New Jersey, about 30 miles (50 km) away. The largest city in the state is Manchester in the north, about 25 miles (40 km) from the town. It has a population of 4,000 (3,000) and an area of 24,000 acres (7,000 km²). The town is located in the New Hampshire-Massachusetts border region, and is located on the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border.

At the 2000 census, there were 28,112 people, 10,402 households, and 7,603 families residing in the town. The racial makeup of the town was 95.01% White, 0.55% African American, 1.21% Native American, 2.27% Asian,0.06% Pacific Islander, and 1.07% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.96% of the population. The median household income was $58,090, and the median family income is $67,278. The per capita income for the town is $26,170. About 3.1% of families and 4.1%. of the residents were below the poverty line, including 5.1. of those under age 18 and 7.6% of those age 65 or over. The town is located on the U.S.-Mexico border. It is the only town in the state to be on the National Register of Historic Places. It was the first town to be added to the state's Geographic Names database in the 1970s. The state's first post-secondary school was founded in 1881. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located in the city. It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1972. The city's name is derived from the French word for "peaceful" or "charm" (for example, "chauffeur"). The town's name also means "home" in French, which means "place of refuge".

Transportation

The nearest airport is ManchesterBoston Regional Airport along the border of Londonderry and Manchester. The nearest rail service is the Haverhill Line of the MBTA Commuter Rail which can be accessed at Lawrence station in Lawrence, Massachusetts. There are two interchanges in Salem: Exit 1, which provides access to Rockingham Park Boulevard, and Exit 2, which providing access to Pelham Road. NH 111 crosses the extreme northern part of the town, connecting to Windham in the west and Hampstead in the east. NH 38 begins in Salem at NH 28 (Broadway) and goes southwest into the town of Pelham. NH 97 connects Salem to Haver Hill, Massachusetts, and NH 111 to Hampstead, New Hampshire, in the middle of the day. NH 28 follows Broadway through the Salem central business district, becoming Rockingham Road in the northern partof the town. NH 112 connects Salem with Methuen in the south and Windham to the west. NH 113 connects Salem and Wind Ham in the north. NH 114 connects Salem, Massachusetts with Hampstead to the east, and Salem to the north and south of the city to the city of Windham.NH 111 connects the town with Windham, Massachusetts in the center, and to the state of New Hampshire in the northeast. NH 98 connects the city with Wind Ham, Massachusetts and the state capital of Concord in the southeast, and the town to the south-east, and north-south, and east-to-west.

The district has about 2,500 students in the middle school and high school classes, with many more in the elementary and middle school classes. It also has about 300 students in middle school, and about 300 in high school. It has a satellite campus at S.N.H. University, which has a campus in Salem, New Hampshire. It is also home to the University of New Hampshire, which is based in the town's downtown area. The city also has two private schools, one private school and one Catholic school, both of which are in the Salem School District. Salem in popular culture

Scenes from The Thomas Crown Affair were filmed at the Salem glider airport, which is now Campbell's Scottish Highlands Golf Course. As mentioned in the film The Sting starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford, it was central to that film's plot. It was also used for the filming of The Godfather: Part II. It is now part of a golf course in the Scottish Highlands. The town was also the setting for the TV series "The Godfather" in the 1950s and 1960s. It has been the site of a number of other major events, including the opening and closing of the Reading and Leeds International Film Festival in the 1970s and 1980s. The city is also the location of the British Grand Prix, which took place in the late 1980s and early 1990s in the town of Salem. It also hosted the British Open Championship in the 1990s and the World Cup in the early 2000s.
