Johnston is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. Incorporated on March 6, 1759, Johnston was named for the colonial attorney general, Augustus Johnston. The town has a total area of 24.4 square miles (63 km²), 23.7 square miles of it is land, and 0.7 sq miles (1.8 km²) is water. In 2000, the town had a population of 28,195 people, 11,197 households and 7,725 families. In 2005, the school system closed two elementary schools and one high school. Johnston is the site of the Clemence Irons House (1691), a stone-ender museum, and the only landfill in Rhode Island. It is governed by a mayor (currently Joe Polisena) and a five-member council (Johnston town council) The town is policed by the Johnston Police Department (Johnstown Police Department) It has four elementary schools, one middle school, one high School, and one middle and high school, all of which are in Johnston. It has a high school that is a part of the Rhode Island Regents' Commended School System. It also has a middle school that was part of Rhode Island's Regents Commended High School System in 2005. The high school was closed in 2008 because of a lack of enrollment. The school system is a division of the Providence and Norwich Turnpike (today's Plainfield Pike) which was chartered in 1791.

History

The area was first settled by English settlers in the seventeenth century as a farming community. In 1759 the town officially separated from Providence and was incorporated on March 6, 1759. The town hosted American General John Sullivan for a dinner in 1779 upon his departure from Rhode Island to fight in New York. During the American Revolution Rhode Island's only gunpowder mill was constructed in Graniteville. The Belknap School, the first public school in the town, was founded in 1790. in 1791 the Providence and Norwich Turnpike (today's Plainfield Pike) was chartered. The first house of worship in Johnston opened when the Baptist Meeting House in Belknaps was constructed. The current colonial attorney general, Augustus Johnston, was later burned in effigy during the Stamp Act protests in 1765 and then fled Rhode Island as a Tory during theAmerican Revolution in 17 1979. He was later elected to the Rhode Island House of Representatives in 1780. He served as the state's attorney general until his death in 1789. He died in office in 1793. He is buried in the Town of Johnston, Rhode Island, along with his wife and three children. He also had a son, William, who was born in 1770 and died in 1794. He had a daughter, Mary, who died in 1802. He has a son-in-law, David, who is also a former state attorney general and served as a state senator in Rhode Island from 1780 to 1783.

The racial makeup of the town was 96.66% White especially Italian Americans (46.7%), 0.65% African American, 0.13% Native American, 1.08% Asian and 0.05% Pacific Islander. In 2000, 46.7% of Johnston residents identified themselves as being of Italian heritage. This was the highest percentage of Italian Americans of any municipality in the country. The median household income was $43,514, and the median family income is $54,837. The per capita income for the town is $21,440. About 6.8% of families and 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.0% of those under age 18 and 13.6% ofThose age 65 or over. Students affected by the closures were transferred to Brown Avenue Elementary School and Winsor Hill Elementary School. This decision was not without controversy, as school officials, parents and teachers complained of inadequate staffing, increased neighborhood traffic and lack of attention for special-needs students. In 2010, the school system announced plans to close two more elementary schools and a middle school. The school system has been in operation since the early 1900s. It is one of the oldest public school systems in Rhode Island. The system was founded in 1872 and is the oldest in the state. Economy

In 2018, Citizens Bank opened a $285 million corporate campus in the town. The project encompasses 425,000 square feet and employs around 3,000 people. Massachusetts-based grocer Market Basket (New England) will open its first Rhode Island store in July 2020. The opening will create 350 local jobs. The grand opening date has not yet been set. The town of Johnston is home to the insurance company FM Global. The company is based in Johnston and has offices in Providence, Warwick, Newport and Pawtucket. It also has a distribution center in Providence and a distribution centre in Pawtow, Rhode Island.
