Narragansett is a town in Washington County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 14,532 at the 2020 census. During the summer months the town's population more than doubles to near 34,000. The town has a total area of 37.8 square miles (98 km²), of which, 14.1 squaremile (37 km²) of it is land and 23.6 square miles of it (62.56%) is water. The following villages and neighborhoods are wholly or partially located in the town: Saunderstown (shared with North Kingstown), South Ferry, Bonnet Shores, Narraganset Pier, Point Judith, Galilee, Great Island, Salt Pond, Mettatuxet, and Jerusalem. In 2010, the town was estimated to have 2,743 people in poverty; college students represented 71% of that group, and in comparison, statewide college students make up only 13.7 percent of the total population in poverty. Three famous beaches in Narragan's Town are: Scarborough Beach, Fisher's Memorial Park, and Galilee State Park. There is a $10.00 admission fee to enter onto the State Beach Complex on the weekends/holidays. Unlike other local (state funded) beaches, Scarborough Beach is self-funded and is not supported by the tax payers' money. The beach complex comprises a state-funded beach complex and a campground, located near a former military fort.

The town's climate is described as "salty" and "dry" by the U.S. Census Bureau. It is also known as the "Town of the Peconic Sea" because of its rocky shoreline. It has a population of 2,816. It also has a reputation for being a good place to live, especially in the summer months. It was the site of the first U.N. World War II-era airbase in the United States, which was built in the late 1800s. It's also known for being one of the oldest towns in the state, dating back to the early 19th century. Its name is derived from the word "narraganset" which means "town of the sea" or "northerly" in English. It means "sea" in French, "nourishment" and "nursery" in the local dialect.

The town is home to many students from the University of Rhode Island located in nearby Kingston. The population was spread out, with 17.3% under the age of 18, 19.6% from 18 to 24, 25.0 percent from 25 to 44, 24.6 percent from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there are 94.5 males. The population density was 1,156.5 inhabitants per square mile (446.5/km²). There were 9,159 housing units at an average density of 647.4 per squaremile (250.0/ km²).

Recreation

Narragansett is known for its summer recreation and beaches. Fishermen's Memorial State Park, located near Galilee, contains a former military fort (Fort Greene) and a campground. The Scarborough Beach Complex comprises two separate areas, the North and South. Roger Wheeler State Beach and Salty Brine State Beach are both located in Point Judith, which is the southernmost point of Narraganset. There is a $10.00 charge to park ($15.00 on the weekends/holidays) and an admission fee to enter onto the beach. This beach sits next to a local sewage treatment plant. Both beaches are protected by the breakwater that protects the port of Galilee. The wind turbine was destroyed after a storm in March 2017. A new pavilion opened in the summer of 2010, complete with concessions, and a wind turbine. It was destroyed by a storm after it was damaged by a windstorm in March 2013. The beach complex is self-sustaining and is not supported by the tax payers' money. It has a pavilion, showers, 75 picnic tables, boardwalk and observation tower. It also has a small fee for parking if a spot on nearby streets can not be found. It is located in the center of the town, though it charges a feewhereas other local (state funded) beaches charge for parking only. Unlike state-funded beaches, this beach is not funded by the state, but by the local taxpayers.

Education

Narragansett operates its own Pre-K through 12 educational system with three schools. The South County Museum is located within the town. The University of Rhode Island's Bay Campus is located in Narraganset. The town's high school principal, Mr. Daniel F. Warner, was voted the 2008 Principal of the Year in Rhode Island. The Narraganett High School football team is known as the "Narraganets" The town is home to the Narragannett Bay Campus of the University ofRhode Island's football team, the "Narrows" team, and the Narrows High School cheerleading squad. It is also home to a number of local charities, including the South County Foundation and South County Children's Home. The North County Foundation is also located in the town, as is the North County Museum, which is known for its collection of Civil War and Civil War-era artifacts. It was founded in 1872 by the descendants of the first settler of the area, who moved to Rhode Island in 1828. The Narrowsburg School for the Arts was established in 1875. It has since become a major institution in the state. The school has been home to many artists and writers, including John Sutter, who wrote the book "The Little Engine That Could" about the history of the town and its history. It also has a museum, which was opened in 1881. The museum is now called the South Coasts Museum.

Narragansett has prohibited more than three college students from living together per housing unit. More than three students are not allowed to live in the same room at the same time.
